sureshk 2 Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 Apologies, I know this has been covered numerous times before from doing searches, but no solution ever seems to be found, the conversations just seem to stop. Emby Server 4.4.3.0 playing on Emby Theatre (LG) 1.0.24. I'm having issues with stuttering playback during Direct Play and Direct Stream. Seems to only be on files around 30Mbps or higher (not specifically tested every bitrate, but lower than 28Mbps is fine, 35 Mbps and above is bad, doesn't matter what codec video or audio it is. The higher the bitrate, the more it stutters. Scenes with more intensity are worse (assume transiently higher bitrate). If I transcode it to lower quality it's fine, but a) I don't want lower quality, b) this kills the HDR and ruins the video. Files play perfectly on my Android phone (direct play, same files, even up to 120Mbps no stuttering at all). Things that make absolutely no difference to whether it occurs or not: 1. I play it off 5400 rpm HDD 2. I play it off 7500 rpm HDD 3. I play it off Crucial BX 300 Sata 3 SSD 4. I play it off NVME Samsung 970 evo plus SSD (so it's 100% not a disk read/write issue, these drives have insane speeds) 5. Wireless AC1900 router 6. Wireless AC Mesh (wireless backhaul) 7. Wired gigabit network with no wireless input at all 8. Whatever I'm doing on the server makes no difference 9. Different hardware (CPU/GPU/RAM) 10. For reference I now have 3900x/2080 super/32GM 3600mhz CL16 RAM/files sitting on a 7500rpm WD RED PRO and Windows is on Samsung 970 evo plus 1TB - still does it. Oh and the files play 100% perfectly through plex to the TV with the same setup... Example file that does it : https://4kmedia.org/lg-cymatic-jazz-hdr10-uhd-4k-demo/ (but anything over around 30 Mbps will do it, higher bitrates, worse it is). Server usage when playing is almost nothing..CPU, Ram, GPU almost nothing as you'd expect with Direct Play, HDD/SSD where it's sitting usage and network usage in keeping with what's being sent and huge amounts of head room still (e.g even over wireless I can be simultaenously be streaming 4 x the files to different android phones and it plays perfectly, but just x1 to the TV and it's stuttering). Seems to me it's just an issue with Emby theatre on LG TV? (Not the TV as plex plays files perfectly - but I have other reasons not to use plex)
Carlo 4561 Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 Have you tried sticking the video on a thumb drive, attaching it to the LG TV and trying to play it that way? Does it play smooth this way?

Carlo 4561 Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 So it plays ok over DLNA from the Emby server as well, just not using the Emby Client on the LG TV itself correct?

SamES 1057 Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 If you’re getting stuttering via DirectPlay, then you must have a network issue. By stuttering, I assume you mean pausing and buffering during playback Can you please confirm that on wireless the TV is connected to the 5GHz band and not 2.4GHz. What wireless channel number are you using? How are you connecting to the server? Is this a local server, or remote? Are you connecting to it via Emby Connect, or directly using the local server name/IP? Stuttering with DirectStream playback of 4K content (ie: during audio conversion of TrueHD tracks) is a different issue and is unavoidable. You need to select audio and subtitle tracks to ensure that these files DirectPlay.

(Not the TV as plex plays files perfectly - but I have other reasons not to use plex) I'm running an identical Emby Server and LG TV Client - on 100Mbit/sec LAN - I can run 80-90 Mbit/sec with zero issues. This is running on an i5-750 (yes really) - so I don't believe it is Emby per say. The fact you are hitting a very specific bandwidth limitation - does suggest it is bandwidth related. On my C8 TV - you must turn OFF the wi-fi to use LAN - otherwise it will continue to use the Wi-Fi (which may or may not be the problem..), despite you plugging in a LAN cable .. On Wifi - I'm also pretty sure that you cannot specific which frequency to connect to on the TV itself - so if your SSID is the same name for both - then it will likely pick the strongest rather than the fastest - which is likely to be the 2.4Ghz channel. If you have separate SSID's then this is probably not an issue. All that being said - if Pl*x and DLNA stream the same file just fine - what's different with Emby .. Edited July 27, 2020 by rbjtech
sureshk 2 Posted April 8, 2021 Author Posted April 8, 2021 Sorry to necro my own thread, but having the same issues again all of a sudden after it just fixed itself previously. I have established that direct play is causing stuttering playback. Anything transcoded is fine. Any container, any video codec, any nitrate, direct play is an issue. Same files forced transcoded (by lowering bitrate) plays perfectly (minus stripping any hdr etc). Connect by wifi or lan makes no difference. Bitrate is not the issue. Streaming 480i TV recordings direct play stutters (around 500kbps bitrate) but transcoding at 20Mbps for a 4k film is fine. Stuttering is much worse with larger / higher quality files when direct played. Restarting server and client makes no difference. Server shows when direct playing that the timer is jumping around all over the place.

So they key question - is what changed ?! Did emby update itself, did your hardware roam to a different wifi channel etc - you'll need to look at logs and identify what changed from it working ok, to when you experienced the issue again.
Luke 42078 Posted April 10, 2021 Posted April 10, 2021 @sureshk please let us know if this helps. thanks.
sureshk 2 Posted April 11, 2021 Author Posted April 11, 2021 Sorry been busy. It just randomly fixed itself. 1
