Preferred subtitle type

I have all the PGS subs that came with my files, and for some I've also created SRT files so I can direct play on my TV (just for foreign films and any foreign dialogue). Is there any way to set the player app to prefer one type over the other? It seems to still pick the PGS subs by default.

External subs should get preference if text-based.  You could also properly mark them as default (and be sure no others are).

BTW to add to what ebr said above to mark a specific external sub as they default you can use this format in naming.

Does that also work for 'forced'?

It's also not possible to name external subs, which is a problem if there's more than one track (forced, normal, SDH/HoH, trivia tracks, commentary tracks, etc).

You most certainly can name your external subs.

If you do that, Emby has no idea what language the subs are.

Weird. I thought I'd tried that, but it didn't work. It displayed fine, but Emby didn't recognise the language so they weren't selected automatically for foreign-language content. But it works now, so I must have been doing something slightly different.

However, if I put for example "Movie (Year).en.English Commentary.srt", it displays as EnglishCommentary, removing the space. Why is this?

 

EDIT: Actually I'm not sure it does work. Once I select a track, it stays selected. So that's interfering with my results.

Okay, so basically I've been trying different suffixes and languages and fiddling with the language of the actual movie, but once the subtitle track becomes something that Emby selects automatically (which it did when I tried "en.default.srt" and changed the movie to Bengali), it stays selected no matter what I do after that, which in this case was changing it to en.English-Commentary.srt and changing the movie back to English. It shouldn't have subs now, but it does. I didn't play the movie at all, just went to its info page.

The subtitle selection is only supposed to stick if I start playback, right? How do I get it to un-stick so I can see what Emby will choose automatically?

I suspect that with the naming convention cayars posted, Emby won't know which language the subtitle file is and therefore will not autoselect it correctly. But since the file is stuck as selected no matter what I name it, I can't prove that. Equally, my prior experiment may have been foiled but it sticking as deselected.

In the list I gave there is a default so that will be used if you haven't already made a selection.

Keep in mind things like Commentary & Trivia aren't normally ever going to be something you would likely have as a default with multiple languages.  It's a pretty obscure outer-edge situation.

So you would have a normal default but could still have the fringe subtitles available for manual use and selection.

That's my point, these types of fringe subtitles would never need to auto select.

You would want the normal subtitle to be used by default which will work.  You wouldn't want commentary being used unless you switched the audio track to commentary.  You wouldn't use a trivia sub unless into that type of thing.  

But the normal ".en" or ".es" would be used for normal subtitles.
