Constant Playback Issues on LAN

Recommended Posts

Posted

If I have to convert any media, it will play fine, but almost all Direct Play to virtually any device on my LAN is sluggish and unstable with playback timeouts.

Give us more info, please.

New install or existing system that started having an issue?

Everything connected via Ethernet cable?  How about the server?

Is Wifi being used for any clients?

Any other general information you can give?

What exactly is the "Playback Issue" and on what clients?  Does the media play correct on any clients?

Existing installation.

Server is running on a wire.

One destination is wired while the other is wireless.

Playback on iPhone app tends to be good, but then it doesn't play in direct mode.  AppleTV and Chromecast app run using direct play.  If I force conversion in the app, it will play okay.

What kind of media are you playing? Codec, extension, etc

MP4 file.

Nothing special.

Used TunesKit to convert from original.

I'm trying to understand why direct play would be sluggish but not transcoded streams?

Are these rather big rips?

Can you play something back, start stats for nerds and get a screen grab to post?

I'm guessing there is something odd with the initial conversion which is why i'm trying to convert them, but running into issues doing that too:

If Emby has the transcode on the fly, the video plays fine.  If Direct Play, there are always issues.

It sounds like the bitrate is too high for the network connection.

Extremely unlikely.  1Gbps to 1Gbps over copper on a very low traffic network.  Besides a transcode at the same bitrate plays fine.

We'd have to go over an example. Thanks.

Vague much?  What information do you need to diagnose?

How to report a problem

The answer to "What information do you need to diagnose" of course can only be fully answered after diagnosis, so offering the standard requirements listed in the link is the usual starting point.
