I jumped ship from my HTPC which would not allow Emby to play any more and would not allow for its installation.  This was brought up in the appropreate place.

I set up my Shield using hdmi to avr to tv currently on Wifi 5g.  I had no issues at all with playing content nor 4k hdr.  I have not seen any of the other issues others have had yet.

I do have an issue with the smart subs not picking up the vobsub file remuxed into the file itself, whereas on the htpc there was no issue.  I believe, if i read correctly that the shield will direct play subs.

However if there are subs (smart subs on) it will not pick up and have to manually find the correct one which in turn transcodes my hevc mkv dts to h264 DD?  The stats state unsupported sub format?

I reripped an episode to remuxed pgs and the smart did not pick it up yet it did direct play.

So is the vobsub the same as sub as it is stated here?  I do not want to re rip 3000 movies/episodes to avoid downgrading via transcoding.

Direct Play Media Formats

Video — m4v,mov,xvid,vob,mkv,wmv,asf,ogm,ogv,mp4,webm Note: The exact containers and codecs that will direct play depends on both the device the app is on and the audio equipment it is connected to (and the type of connection - e.g. HDMI, optical, etc.). The device with the widest support is the NVidia Shield.

Subtitles - srt, ssa, ass, sub, vtt, pgs

What am I missing?  If vobsub is different from sub, can vobsub be added as a supported format?

Thanks

Hi.  Exoplayer does not currently support vobsub so we have to burn these in.  We may be able to support them better in the future.

Thanks.

@blumamba PGS Subtitles are not support on firestick, smart tv, and chromecast. I try it the only way to avoid transcoding with pgs subtitle is to disable transcoding on users seeting

Media Playback

Allow video playback that requires transcoding

uncheck this option and try it with VobSub

No don't do that, instead just don't enable the vobsub subtitles.

And, also, PGS subtitles ARE supported on the Fire if the item can be direct played.  The subs in question here are VobSub.

Thanks.  I will just have to suck it up and rerip with pgs.  It does play direct with no problems except the smart subs dont pick it up and have to manually select.  No big deal there since it stores the correct sub for next time.

Out of curiosity, how far down the priority list is vobsub support for the future? I figure a ways😂

It really depends on user demand and the size of the audience for it compared to other requests.

If you are going to re-rip I would choose a text-based subtitle format.  Much better compatibility.

@blumamba what software do you use to convert pgs to another format?

If that should be true, where's the "official" feature request thread for adding vobsub support, here? I'd like to attach my signature there.

Thank you luke.  I can put in an official request if needed?

EBR - I will rerip the episodes, movies etc on an as needed basis.

Frostbyte -   I use DVDfab and gpu is fast enough not to make it too terrible a big deal.

Horstpipe - I will start one if Luke needs me to.  I suspect it has been brought up before but in the "larger world" picture it just hasn't been in that much demand to make it worth while for them to include as of yet.

Cheers and thanks to All!

I'm currently a little confused anyway as vobsubs direct play fine here. I muxed them into the mkv, does this make a difference?
