MTBadDog 1 Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 (edited) I'm fairly new to emby, but I seem to be having a problem I can't resolve: When I add a genre to a movie it won't show up on the user interface. for example, I have a movie called anastasia. I want it to appear under the genre "Animation". I go into the metadata editor, add the genre, delete the other genres, uncheck the field under 'lock this item' so it won't get over written. I refresh the library. The genre does not appear on the user screen. I query the library.db file and the info is there: select Genres from MediaItems where Name = "Anastasia" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Genres --------- Animation I don't see anything in the nfo xml file. I'm assuming it's not a permissions issue or it wouldn't have been able to create the nfo file. OS: OpenSUSE 15 running on an esxi vm (local volume) emby server: 4.4.3.0 Any idea where i can look next? edit: I checked a bunch of the other mp4 files in the Animation dir and their nfo files did have the correct genre tag: /Chicken Run 2000.nfo: <genre>Animation</genre> Edited June 23, 2020 by Phil Schroeder
Luke 42083 Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 Hi there, what user screen are you referring to?
MTBadDog 1 Posted June 23, 2020 Author Posted June 23, 2020 (edited) Either the web interface (chrome or ff browser) or the roku app (roku ultra I think). Those are the only ones I'm using at the moment. Another piece of information that might be useful. After using the metadata editor, if I navigate away from a move I just edited and go back, the genre section is empty even though I just updated it. I look in the dB and the xml files and the changes I made are there, but no longer show up in the metadata editor. Edited June 23, 2020 by Phil Schroeder
MTBadDog 1 Posted June 23, 2020 Author Posted June 23, 2020 From the home screen under "My Media", Movies -> genre.
Luke 42083 Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 When you click on the movie detail screen, does it show that genre? Can you show a screenshot? Thanks.
MTBadDog 1 Posted June 23, 2020 Author Posted June 23, 2020 Well that's interesting. I don't see where it lists genre, but I clicked on a couple of movies that do show up in the genre view and I don't see them displaying a genre either. Maybe I don't have something enabled?
MTBadDog 1 Posted June 24, 2020 Author Posted June 24, 2020 OK, so this is interesting. So I used the editor (pencil icon) next the title on the movie details. Tried it on 2 different movies. One of them stuck and now I have the bogus genre that I added. The other one didn't and didn't add the genre I used on it. For some reason it is movie specific. I'm going to try it on the roku and make sure it shows up there. I've only used the metadata editor off of the configuration page. The only thing I can think of is there is some type of difference in the dir permissions. Although, they are 2 different types of files, one is an mp4 (the one that can't be changed) and the one that works in an avi. Does emby look at file meta data? I know everything can't manipulate mp4 meta data successfully.
MTBadDog 1 Posted June 24, 2020 Author Posted June 24, 2020 Luke, I think I have a work around. I found when I used that actual genre I wanted (Animation) it still deleted it - for some reason the bogus ones worked. My wife suggested that I place a space char behind it and low and behold, it worked! I can now add that genre in both the movie details screen and the metadata editor in the server config and it worked in both places. Now I just have to remember to put that space char in when I change the genre over. Thank you for spending all this time on this. Perplexes me what going on here, some type of parsing issue maybe? Thanks again!

MTBadDog 1 Posted June 24, 2020 Author Posted June 24, 2020 I did. Since then I've done a little experimenting with made up genre name to see if I could reproduce it with anything else. So far, only the string "Animation" has needed a space char after it to stick.
Luke 42083 Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 If you're still having an issue @cayars can jump on with you and take a look.
Carlo 4561 Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 Absolutely, just shoot me a PM @Phil Schroederif this is something you would like to do.
Luke 42083 Posted July 29, 2020 Posted July 29, 2020 @Phil Schroeder were you able to resolve this with @cayars ?
Carlo 4561 Posted July 30, 2020 Posted July 30, 2020 Not that I recall Luke. Of course I'd still love to help if needed.
