Insert tvg—ID strings into an m3u based on channel name for accurate matching.

I’m posting this to stop myself reinventing the wheel because I suspect there’s already a solution out there for this.

My problem : I want to use schedules direct or emby’s own server to create a fully (as far as possible) populated epg with correct channel logos.

The issue My IPTV provider provides a playlist without  tvg-ID field being filled in but on each line does include the tvg-name

Example:

#EXTINF:-1 tvg-ID="" tvg-name="BBC1*" tvg-logo="" group-title="EU UK",BBC1*
http://provider.com/username/password/80097

I want to create the tvg-ID value and insert it using the channel name string as a pointer to the correct tvg-ID, maybe using fuzzy searching of an XML file. If I’m to use Emby long term I suspect this is a problem I’m going to encounter often.

Is there already a program that will accomplish such a feat or should I start writing my own in python?  Or, as has occurred to me, am I attacking this problem from the wrong direction?

Hi, have you checked out xteve?

Yup, I tried it but it wouldn’t automatically map channels, it would be the same as manually mapping in Emby in terms of usability.

I tried setting PMS as the EPG source ( which applies to  Emby according to the description)  but that resulted in a dead stop from which I couldn’t progress further (no mapping menu).

This is the result of using xmltv as the source with no XMLTVID being inserted :

I’ve decided to just jump back to Virginmedia. With that cost of schedules direct + Emby + the amount of time I’m spending on this and uncertainty regarding my iptv provider it’s just not worth the cost saving. Maybe if I was a sports fan it might have been worth It.

Thank you so much for your replies though.
