Very Slow Server (spinning circle) unraid emby docker but reboot fixes it

Hi,

I have been struggling with very slow performance emby docker on my unraid server for a while now as the home screen can take 10+ seconds to load, each movie/tv item I select can take up to 10 seconds to load, lots of the spinning circle.

here are my server specs

M/B: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. X399 DESIGNARE EX-CF Version x.x - s/n: Default string
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. Version F12. Dated: 12/11/2019
CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X 16-Core @ 3500 MHz
HVM: Enabled
IOMMU: Enabled
Cache: 1536 KiB, 8192 KiB, 32768 KiB
Memory: 48 GiB DDR4 (max. installable capacity 512 GiB)
Network: bond0: fault-tolerance (active-backup), mtu 9000
 eth0: 10000 Mbps, full duplex, mtu 9000
Kernel: Linux 4.19.107-Unraid x86_64
OpenSSL: 1.1.1d

I am running Emby 4.4.3.0 and it is installed on a 1TB Samsung NVME 970 Evo Plus

I do have large libraries 8000 Movies, 1300 TV Series, 14000 Albums

I also have a 10gbe connection to my unraid server but it makes no difference if I connect using that or a standard 1gb connection, I can also confirm I have this issue if there are no users connected.

I know that emby can perform perfectly if I restart emby from the gui but it lasts less than an hour and seems to get slower and slower.

This happens across all devices, all internet browsers, TV's, Phones, Tablets wether on 10gbe, Wifi, only restarting emby cures the problem.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

Hi Luke, just pm'd you a server log, impossibly slow at the moment but holding off a reboot to see what happens overnight (I see your Bazinga! is back!) 🙂

Is the EVO your appdata drive on Unraid?  What's it's free space look like?  do you do lots of large file transfers that could also be using the drive?

You have more than enough power, so maybe it's something with your Unraid setup?

I run my Emby server on Unraid with considerably less powerful hardware.  I've only had issues with it crashing once when I ran out of disk space on my cache/appdata drive.  I replaced it with a larger SSD, and haven't had an issue yet.

Hi,

Yes my NVME Evo is my cache/appdata drive and generally have approx 600GB free at it's worst before the mover runs overnight.

When Emby becomes impossibly slow there is little/no activity on my resources including CPU, RAM, Cache Drive.

I have not had any crashing issues just slowdown, as I stated though if I restart Emby from within Emby Gui everything is lightening fast again so I do not think it is a resource issue but something is slowing Emby down to a point where I have to restart at least twice a day.

For faster server performance, try shutting down the Ombi software and leaving it shut down.

Additionally, but secondary, consider removing these plugins:

	CoverArt 4.1.9.0
	Email Notifications 3.1.6.0
	Movie Theme Songs 1.7.1.0
	Movie Theme Videos 1.7.1.0
	People Backup 1.4.1.0
	PushBullet Notifications 3.1.3.0
	Theme Songs 1.6.6.7
	TV Theme Videos 1.7.1.0

Hi, Thanks for your reply,

I have removed everything mentioned above and stopped my Ombi Docker.

Can I ask is this for diagnostic purposes or recommended in general as my server should be more than adequate

Ombi in particular hits the server pretty hard with large numbers of requests at a time, so if you're going to use that, make sure it's not happening during your peak usage hours.

The other suggestions were just general tips to improve server performance because every plugin that you install comes with a cost.

Ok, thanks Luke, I made the assumption that if after a restart, considering the spec of my server and this is a recent-ish issue I had a problem as I have always run those plugins, however I have not always run Ombi.  The server is still lightning fast after making the changes you suggested, I will leave it a day and start re-installing the plugins every day.

Thank you

Just to update, no slowdown at all since stopping my Ombi Docker, I re-enabled all plugins listed in my previous post yesterday.  I have messaged tidusjar on Discord a couple of days ago but no response yet.  I guess this slowdown does not affect everyone? maybe due to large libraries?
