Tried every possible log in combination I can think of...

Hi, new here. I am really against just heading straight to the forums for advice for things like this but I am just about ready to pull my hair out trying to set up emby. Here is what I have done so far and below this are a few problems I am running into:

* Windows 10
* Wired ethernet connection
* 90mpbs DL & 90mbps UL
* VPN usually running, depends on the day

* Newest version of Emby Server downloaded on my laptop.
* Media folder setup went fine, about 60 films appear in my home screen for me to watch
* All films are either mp4 or mkv.

Here is what I am trying to achieve:

*Native playback of every file, wether or not its MKV or MP4, wether or not it's 1080p or 2160p, I want them all playing at direct source or whatever its called. I don't want to do any transcoding!!!!! All it does is buffer my films which all run perfect in VLC! I read up that there aren't really any browsers that will play my mp4 HVEC files, and then found that there is an emby theatre. So i downloaded that, and I am prompted with the log in page but np matter what damn combo of numbers and names and passwords and port codes i enter, nothing works. it always says `"Connection Failure: we are unable to connect to the selected server right now" What am i supposed to be putting in these two fields?

Thanks in advance!

Apologies as I doubt this'll help much.

But anyway....

Have you looked at this to see what plays for free and what doesn't -

https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001173099-emby-premiere-feature-matrix

Having said that, I would have thought theatre would have played for a minute to at least show everything is working, so maybe its not a premiere thing.

I also would have though if you have theatre on the same machine as the server access should be quite easy, there would be a user in Theatre with the same name that you use to get into your server.

The new Edge brower plays slightly more stuff natively than other browsers, though I think thats just one extra audio codec.

You could possibly try Kodi on  your machine to play stuff as I think there are no restrictions re playing vs paying and it plays most stuff directly. You need to get them to talk to each other though, which can be done with plugins and repositories and stuff.

Again apologies for some fairly random thoughts which are probably rubbish anyway.

Hi, are you using emby theater on the same windows machine as the server?

Hi, are you using emby theater on the same windows machine as the server?

Hi! Thanks for the replies!

Yes I am using the same laptop, it's the only device other than my phone that i have used with Emby (or tried to at least) , as i set up the server on the laptop as well. I also I forgot to mention that I paid the monthly fee to grant further access just to see what its like but so far I feel like i wasted my money  :(

On the browser I can run my MKVs just fine but the MP4s that are HEVC (it appears that HEVC and 265 something or other are the same..? sorry, im new to all this lingo as of this week) all studder and buffer. I bring the quality down from the "auto" 1080p 60mbps to 1080p 4mbps and it also studders a bit, but not as bad. I feel like I am losing quality by doing this though, right?

As long as I can use the browser without these hiccups at it's native file resolution, then it would be okay if I couldn't get into the theater in theory, but it's looking like I can't just use Emby to play the mp4s without it transcoding.... is there a way around this? I read another post that showed the four options to check and uncheck under user settings which i experimented with, but to no avail-- that just rendered all the files unplayable with a user message showing on screen before the film even starts.

The theater and phone thing, while not SUPER important or necessary like I said, is bugging me, because I am stubborn.

It says:

Host:

(b l a n k )

______________________________

192.168.1.100 or https://myserver.com/

Port:

8096

Am i supposed to just enter either the 192.168 etc number there, or what? I tried that, nothing. I tried the number that looks similar on my router, nothing. I tried the number that also looks similar that is in my router settings, nothing. I tried all 5 different username variations, anton x , antonx, etc, i tried emails, etc. I then tried all of those with a different port number that i can see in some of my emby settings, which is very close but a little different than  8096. I am not a tech person nor do i know the first thing about networking, so I am scared to just dropping info and numbers on a public form... heh. Any advice? I went into settings to and messed around with the setting that says: Automatic Port Mapping (whatever that means) and i had that both checked, and unchecked, nothing. I feel like i am just missing something very basic lol.

I guess you received and entered you key into the server after you paid for it ?

Posted (edited)

Yep, twice! But even then you should be able to log into the theater without paying, and they give you a 1 minute preview, right? Like I said, if I can get what I need from the browser, I couldn't care less in the end about theater.

In my not knowledgeable just a user way, I imagine if you want stuff to play without transcoding, Theater is way better.

Also, personally I can't find anywhere in Theater the place to enter the host and port at all. Its probably there somewhere, just can't spot it. Anyway, did you try the whole host thing i.e. http://192.168.1.100 (or whatever) with 8096 for the port ?

Yeah, tried that and every other combo I could think of. But I just noticed this, when comparing my settings page to seemingly everyone else and their settings-- hell even the troubleshooting screencaps from Emby themselves, it seems I am entirely missing a whole line of information: first screencap is from someone on youtube and their settings, second screencap is of my settings page! Where the heck is my In Home LAN Access?

I am even more confused now than I ever was.

* VPN usually running, depends on the day

Lets start with the basics - you should have an IP address given to you from your router - something like 192.168.x.x - or 10.x.x.x

do an 'IPconfig' at the command prompt, or look in local networking properties.  If you don't have this - then you need to fix this first.

Emby 'should' have an identical LAN IP address as this listed as the LAN address on the control panel - ie what you need to connect to it locally.

The WAN address (again without running a VPN) should be your ISP's WAN address (or the VPN address if that is active) - none of that is needed anyway for playing locally, so lets get local working first.

If you have a LAN address is 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x but don't see these in Emby dashboard, then I would reinstall Emby as it's unlikely to work until you do.

Another slightly more technical way to see if Emby is listening is to do a netstat - again from the command prompt.

C:\>netstat -a | find "8096"
  TCP    0.0.0.0:8096           MEDIA:0                LISTENING
  TCP    192.168.30.100:8096    pc:50374       ESTABLISHED

You can see my server is listening on 192.168.30.100 using port 8096 and has a client connected to it.

Howdy! Okie so, I started out by uninstalling everything related to Emby, the server, the theater, i logged out of my account online, cleared all browsing data, cache, cookies, everything I could think of.

I then restarted my computer, without a VPN and reinstalled the Emby server and theater.

Running a command prompt, and did an IPconfig, with no VPN on, and there is a lot of information it spits out... not exactly sure whats safe and whats needed for me to post here? Its kind of in sections but here is the info:   (I use colored x's to block out possible private info i guess? this is all new to me, not sure what is safe) --

   Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.X.X

After all that I ran the second thing you mentioned and got a much simpler list of results:

  TCP    0.0.0.0:8096           anton:0                LISTENING

  TCP    [::1]:49998            anton:8096             ESTABLISHED

There are no edits to this info, so as you can see my long LAN address is not there where yours is next to any of those TCPs... any insight? @@rbjtech

I appreciate all this help, i really am trying to learn as best I can, and am determined to get this to work! heh.

***EDIT - i forgot to mention that the Remote (WAN) access: number that shows up on my server dashboard settings in Emby when i access it through my browser is not anywhere in all of this info i have copied and pasted above! Is there a chance that this is an IP that was given to me maybe by my VPN and the reason I cant access is because i originally set up Emby (3 or 4 re installs ago) while I was connected to a VPN possibly? I don't know if i did or not for certain but yeah, that's all I can think of as being a culprit)

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

   Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :

   Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : feXX::aXXX:67bc:bab7:2e3a%XX

IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.14

  Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.X.X

These are all private IP addresses - so there is no reason to obfuscate them - it's the WAN/Internet addresses that you should not really publish.

So from the list above, I'm assuming you would want to connect to your Ethernet port - but as you have two interfaces on the same machine/subnet (the wired and wireless), when you installed Emby it would have used the primary address for that machine which may or may not have been the wireless interface ..  -_-

I would disable the wireless interface, re-install emby and then re-enable it.

Emby should then show the LAN address as 192.168.2.14 and WAN address as whatever your WAN address is (assuming you turned on the remote options).

In any browser or client on that network (anything using 192.168.2.1 -> 254) including itself) you should be able to connect without issue.

ie

http:\\192.168.2.14:8096

Should bring up the login page.

If it only works on the server itself (ie 192.168.2.14), then the issue is the local firewall on the server - it needs to be opened to allow incoming traffic on the LAN - but I believe that should be setup as part of the install.

To note - the default gateways on every device on the 192.168.2.x network should be the same - likely 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.2.254

I hope this helps.  :D

No dice  :(  I am not sure if I am doing it right but I followed this course of action:

Control Panel -> Network & Internet -> Network Connections -> Right clicked on the fourth option which is Wireless Network Connection, it's the only one that does not have an ethernet symbol in the corner so I am assuming that is in fact the one! From there i hit disable.

After that I uninstalled Emby completely, then reinstalled it, set up all the settings, made it to the dashboard and saw that it was only the same WAN there again. At that point i re-enabled the wireless network connection, refreshed the server from my icons tray, signed out and in, etc and nothing.

--------------------

So again, i went back and signed out, but this time i switched up the order of how i did it, starting with deleting the server first, then disabling the wireless, then reinstalling the server. after i reinstalled it, instead of setting it up first, i went and re-enabled the wireless, finished the set up, and nothing, even with some refreshes and restarts.

It still only shows that same WAN. I am at a loss!  :o

Hi.  Are you running the Theater desktop app or the one from the Windows store?

You want the desktop app for better player capability but, also, the store app has restrictions on accessing the network on the same machine it is on (that's a security feature for store apps).

Uhhh, I mean I was using the desktop app from emby's site, not from the Microsoft store, but as you can see in the latest posts, me and the user above me are working on trying to establish the LAN address appearing in the server dashboard in the browser at the moment. Theater does appear to be the main end goal for me but isn't something I can even log into at all, let alone about worrying about playback issues yet. I can't log in, no matter what I type in, and when I click on the only other option there (sign in with emby connect) nothing even happens when I click it. Super frustrating

.. can you explain why you are using both wireless and wired on the 'server' ?  Disable wireless full stop for the moment as you need to understand which IP emby is using as it's 'server'.  If necessary, we can force the issue using 'Server /

Network / Bind to local network address: ' and literally type in the allocated IP address.  but we must know for sure what the IP address is.  Last time it was 192.168.2.14  An IPconfig will confirm this as you did before.

Howdy, so before I saw your message, I reset my router just to see if it would do anything, but yes based on your most recent reply I am honestly not sure why i was / am running both hah, I just am not very tech savvy and just did not realize what I was doing. I still kind of dont unfortunately heh. Okie so just ran the same two command prompts you asked me to a while back and there is the screen cap!

So now it seems to have changed from 192.168.2.14    to    192.168.2.11

  And t
o proceed, I just input the second one, 192.168.2.11 into the empty field in network settings on Emby where it wants to bind to a local network address, then it should work? I will go ahead and do that right now!

Edit: No dice :( I tried entering both of those addresses in the bind to local network field, as well as entering them into the Theater window, along with server resets in between and still having the wireless thing disabled since you mentioned to disable it again, and no access for me. I am doing something wrong probably but I have been awake for close to 38 hours, definitely not my finest moment for learning new tech stuff.

You just need the one address - 192.168.2.11

Ignore the 169 address, that is basically 'no address'.

You should be able to 'ping' yourself and the gateway.

So try these

ping 192.168.2.11

and

ping 192.168.2.1

if you get 'replies' from both of these, then 192.168.2.11 is definitely your IP address and this (and only this) should be what you need to put in the 'bind' config for emby.  For kicks, in the 'LAN Networks' section above the bind - put in 192.168.2.0/24 and restart emby.

On the clients, just use 192.168.2.11 as the server with port 8096.  use a browser to start with, forcing http - ie

http:\\192.168.2.11:8096

If that doesn't work - then I'm really out of ideas as 'something' is listening on the correct port 8096 on your machine as shown by your netstat results above ..

Alright, eighteen hours of sleep later and I am back at it, albeit with seemingly sad results:

5eb680a88a736_ping.png

It doesn't appear that I am off to a good start today! A little too many general failures for someone like me to be bombarded with before 7:00 am

Oh dear ..

So if the machine can't ping itself or local gateway - then there is something very wrong with basic networking on that device..

RIP

No but for real I been putting off building a PC for a year now. Should probably get around to that. I have another laptop laying around the house somewhere, might turn that shit on just to poke around with emby on it and see what kind of results it gives. Thanks so much for all your help though, means a lot!

Did you ever try http://localhost:8096 ?

Unfortunately yes, that was one of the first things I tried. But I just turned on an old laptop and installed the server, and voila, my local address shows up instantly, with theater playback working to perfection, doing exactly what I needed it to do: playback films in their native resolution and bitrate or whatever and not tearing my CPU to shreds -- and by extension, not have my films constantly buffer every two minutes despite transcoding at a lousy 4mbps !

As shitty as it is that I can't use Emby on the laptop that I use everyday due to its networking problems, I am relieved to know that it's not Emby's fault at all, so thanks to @@rbjtech for holding my hand through this baloney and getting to the bottom of it all! I was this close to just bailing, and using something else. I will be sure to setup a server on whatever computer I end up building in the future, and for now I will just have to repurpose this absolutely f***ed up other computer into a temporary server for the time being!

Thanks everyone, means a lot!

A fresh OS rebuild is probably best - but you could try the commands below (right click on CMD before you hit enter and 'Run As Administrator) as they need elevation :-

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults:

netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults:

netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset Firewall to installation defaults:

netsh advfirewall reset

All the best.  :D
