External player still an option?

Done a search and all the directions i find don't seem to apply any more. Is it still possible to use an external player to support DVD's that have been ripped in DVD format (like VLC player...)

Emby Theatre for Windows seems to have it:

 

 

I've not used it, so I don't know how well it works.
