Pluggy 0 Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 Hi all, This is my first time setting up a media server and my ideal setup is to be able to share media from my media server to devices connected to my local network ONLY. I have disabled remote access in the settings but aren't sure if content can be viewed by external sources. Is there a way to make emby share content without actual internet access and only use local network? Thanks!

Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.
CBers 7450 Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 https://www.canyouseeme.org Enter the port your Emby is running on and test. You will need access to the Internet for Emby to "phone home" and check for updates etc. and if you have Premier.
Pluggy 0 Posted May 2, 2020 Author Posted May 2, 2020 Okay so disabling remote access has stopped anyone outside my local network accessing my library also mean ISP is not able to see shared library content? I have checked the port both http and HTTPS and both come back with error and could not be seen. I don't have premier. Once I have got used to how emby works I may enable updates in the future. But I see your point.
Pluggy 0 Posted May 2, 2020 Author Posted May 2, 2020 Also is it possible to disable http access and just HTTPS
Luke 42078 Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 Also is it possible to disable http access and just HTTPS Hi there, have you explored all of the emby server network settings?
Pluggy 0 Posted May 2, 2020 Author Posted May 2, 2020 I've tried but finding a bit hard to understand as there's no clear option to disable HTTP and to simply use HTTPS
Luke 42078 Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 You have to setup an ssl certificate before you can use https. You can do that in server network settings.
Pluggy 0 Posted May 3, 2020 Author Posted May 3, 2020 ive followed the guide but still struggling to setup https. If i only intend to use emby to share media from media server at home to other devices in the same home on the same local network would there be a need for HTTPS? as i understand the localhost server thing is like a local intranet setup and cannot be seen by outside sources such as ISP or people who aren't connected to our wifi?
pwhodges 2012 Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 Setting up https without an external connection and domain name is tricky, and generally thought to be unnecessary. Your ISP cannot see into your system; they can see traffic passing in and out of it (though if it's encrypted, they may not be able to get any useful information from it), but you have to enable incoming access deliberately. I believe that the upcoming v2 of Caddy (which I use v1 of as a proxy) will have built-in capability of providing local https, but I have yet to test this - testing Caddy v2 as a proxy is top of my list of things to do, though. Pluggy 0 Posted May 3, 2020 Author Posted May 3, 2020 (edited) okay so if i only intend to share media via local network would this count towards internet usage? also if shared content is only running through local network, dosit matter if its encrypted , as nothing would be passed externally just internally thanks! Edited May 3, 2020 by Pluggy
pwhodges 2012 Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 Nothing that happens internally to your network counts as happening outside it; that's what "local network" means! Encryption within your local network is unnecessary unless you have reason to believe that you have "bad actors" operating within your local network - and simple paranoia is not in itself such a reason. Paul
Pluggy 0 Posted May 3, 2020 Author Posted May 3, 2020 Okay sorry if I seem paranoid or asking the same questions. I've never setup a media server before and simply wished to make sure connections etc are all secure. Your help is highly appreciated! The encryption over local network is not needed as I understand it, having the ability to create user accounts flin emby for users to view media content is great! However I have found other upnp apps such as bubbleupnp can also view content with no login or.password required, I'll have to do check the upnp settings and see if it's possible to only allow particular devices I know Thanks Rob
Luke 42078 Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 However I have found other upnp apps such as bubbleupnp can also view content with no login or.password required, I'll have to do check the upnp settings and see if it's possible to only allow particular devices I know Rob That's from the Dlna server feature, which can be disabled.
pwhodges 2012 Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 If you don't want any external access to your media, why are you running bubbleupnp? I didn't know it, but reading about it now, it seems to be largely aimed at enabling external access. Essentially, any app running upnp is liable to be trading security for convenience. Paul
Pluggy 0 Posted May 3, 2020 Author Posted May 3, 2020 Okay so I have now disabled dlna features. I ran bubbleupnp when trying universal media server but wasn't keen on it, kept the bubbleupnp on a fire tablet. I have tried to install emby on the fire tablet but it appears it is no longer supported even downloading the emby app from APK pure etc it can't be installed so tried bubbleupnp Would it be advisable then, to turn off upnp in router settings and have dlna on media server disabled? Thanks
Luke 42078 Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 Would it be advisable then, to turn off upnp in router settings and have dlna on media server disabled? It's just a question of if that's something you want, or not.
