A serious mistake in creating a library - EmbyServer 4.4.2.0

Hi,

When creating a new Movies library, with about 300 individual folders, all stored in a single folder, I noticed a serious mistake by Emby.

It turns out that Emby created the library with totally crazy items, including hundreds of things that are not in the folder.

As far as I could understand, these marked items are series episodes that are in another folder, which has nothing to do with the folder indicated in the library, for tracking, that is, Emby went to get data from another folder and made the library something totally crazy.

I removed the entire library, rescanned it and redid the same collection and the result was the same.

I ask for attention with some priority, as this is something very harmful.

Thank you

Hi there, can you please go over an example, along with the file and folder naming? Thanks.

Posted (edited)

Okay, the log file was over 350MB, so it was not possible to attach.

All other libraries are perfect and I use the same pattern for all of them as below.

In the folder that gave this problem I have 100% of the files in the format below and nowhere else.

This is a folder of films in two versions, I use it like this for a long time I never had a problem.

Movies two versions:

Folder =

Avatar.2008

Files =

Avatar.2008 - 720p.mp4

Avatar.2008 - 1080p.mp4

How can I do to send a log that is 350MB?

Just because bad naming did work does not mean it will always work

I am not sure of the exact naming for multiple versions because I do not use multiple versions. But the correct naming is like:

Avatar (2008)

I think there is an Emby guide for naming in their help section and it generally should be followed exactly.

Thanks for your attention, but the naming is correct and works perfectly that way for two versions. @@Luke

Avsnitt is Swedish for Episode.  Maybe it's picking up an Avatar tv series of some kind?

I'd try renaming the folder to Avatar (or as suggested above Avatar (2008)) and then clear everything out of the folder, leaving just one of the movie files?

Then run a full scan and allow it to complete.

I am sorry to tell you but the naming is wrong:

From the Emby support section at:

https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001159102-movie-naming

Naming your media

Once you've prepared your media files, it's time to name your media in a way that allows Emby the best chance of determining what it is. The best way to do this is to use the format: "MovieName (year).extension" such as "Top Gun (1986).mp4" or "Avatar (2009).mkv". Because Emby allows many other advanced functions that can be used with your media we want to create a folder structure that aids in this use. The simplest method of doing this is to put all media related to a Movie in the same folder using a name "MovieName (year). It will look like this:

\Movies\Avatar (2009)\Avatar (2009).mkv

\Movies\Pulp Fiction (1994)\Pulp Fiction (1994).mp4

\Movies\Reservoir Dogs (1992)\Reservoir Dogs (1992).mp4

\Movies\The Usual Suspects (1995)\The Usual Suspects (1995).mkv

\Movies\Top Gun (1986)\Top Gun (1986).mp4

Emby tries quite hard to match any naming but it sometimes fails, as in this case  I believe. The fact that bad naming works in some cases is simply a testimonial as to how hard Emby tries to make a match.

You are clearly perfectly free to name as you please but it is wrong to blame Emby when the bad naming fails.

BTW: It is not uncommon for bad naming to work in some cases and not in some other cases or to fail to work completely or to fail to work for every file in a library and work for every file in another library.

Lastly I have found, since I do not use extras etc, that you do not really need a folder for each file but it is imperative that the files be named correctly.

We'd have to see the server log from when it was first scanned in in order to see what happened.

Hi,

Rather, I would like to thank you for all the messages that aim to help solve the problem.

I read and reread everything above and I am now doing several tests to try to identify the problem, because I use the folders in the format I indicated about three years ago and I never had a problem, even until two days ago everything was perfect.

Regarding the naming of the folders, I remember again that I do use the format mentioned in post #07, however, this folder with the problem is composed exclusively of films with multi versions.

In my tests I made a copy of ten folders to rename them and ascertain by chance the format of the folders is interfering in all this.

I will return here with the test results.

Thank you

Well, about the new tests I did.

1. I created a new folder, TEST

2. In the TEST folder I added copies of ten movie folders in multi versions

3. Of the ten folders, I renamed only two folders and did not rename any files within the folders

4. The folders I've always used and never had a problem, have the following format:
A.Quite.Place.2018 [using dots between words]

5. As tests, to understand how Emby treats each of the formats, I renamed the 2 folders as follows:
- 127 Hours (2010) [without dots and year in parentheses]
- A.Beautiful.Day.In.The.Neighborhood (2019) [keeping the dots between words and the year in parentheses]

6. I kept the other eight folders in the usual format, as per item # 4 above.

So I created a new library pointing to the TEST folder and Emby did the perfect scan, without adding that crazy films that refer to a Nordic series folder that I have separate and everything is perfect too.

Thus, it is proven that the format I use for films with multiple versions can indeed have this format (Avatar.2012) and within it, the film in the format Avatar.2012 - 720p.mp4 and Avatar.2012 - 1080p.mp4

In short, the mystery remains that Emby added these films (post # 1) that are actually episodes of Nordic series that are in another folder (Nordic Series) and with that library everything is perfect too.

So I think I have no alternative but to remake the Multi Versions Movies library.

Now I have done new tests.

1. Delete the test library he had created and Emby did a new scan, showing that the library was indeed deleted.

2. I deleted from the TEST folder the 2 movie folders that I had renamed, leaving only six folders, with the format I always used (Avatar.2012)

3. I created the library again pointing to the TEST folder.

4. As you can see in the image, Emby correctly identified the 6 films, but was unable to download the poster for two films (which in the first test downloaded the posters for these same films).

5. This makes me believe that if the official library is re-created with 600 films, Emby will not be able to download the posters for many other films, not to mention the mistake of post # 1, which I have not yet identified the reason for adding data that has nothing to do with the library folder.

I ask for help to solve this problem.

Thank you

Hi.  Something is obviously being misidentified and I think it will probably come back to the undocumented format of the folder names in some way.  When undocumented things work it may be that they only work in certain circumstances and not others because it isn't something we would have ever tested and the discovery logic is quite complex.

New tests - The library will be perfect

Now I used the TEST folder with the six films and cleaned it completely, leaving only the two mp4 files and nothing else.

I also renamed all six folders and files, leaving them in this format:

Folder:
A Quiet Place (2018)
Files:
A Quiet Place (2018) - 720p.mp4
A Quiet Place (2018) - 1080p.mp4

I am going to recreate the test library and now that everything is in the standards mentioned on the Emby website, there is no reason why the collection is not perfect, with the exact identification of the nfo and arts.

We'll see the results next.

What were the results?

Hi,
Thank you for your interest.
I did a lot of tests and among them, I redid the entire library four times and noticed progress.
Now I'm doing the last test and I will be back here to leave feedback.

Great, thanks.
