jlficken 3 Posted April 27, 2020 Posted April 27, 2020 (edited) I can get this to happen with the Roku, in Chrome, and in original Edge (before Chromium) It seems that when transcoding the video randomly stops playback at the client, however, the server Dashboard shows it's still playing. There's a 2+ minute buffer, I've tried with throttling on and off, and the temp directory is on a Ram Disk. My server has 128GB of RAM and I only use 12% of it so that shouldn't be the issue. I've attached the Emby log as well as the ffmpeg log from one of the transcode sessions with issues. Any help would be appreciated as it's basically unusable for family members that can't direct play. If they skip ahead 10 seconds it will work again. If they exit and go back in it will work again. It just doesn't work for very long before it freezes again. I have a gigabit fiber connection so that shouldn't be the issue. ETA: I forgot to mention it but I'm using a Quadro P2000 for the transcoding. ffmpeg-transcode-9f912e52-3b42-4603-b849-d107cfb46830_1.txt embyserver.txt Edited April 27, 2020 by jlficken
Luke 42080 Posted April 27, 2020 Posted April 27, 2020 Hi, as a test, if you disable hardware transcoding in server transcoding settings, does that help?
jlficken 3 Posted April 27, 2020 Author Posted April 27, 2020 (edited) I did try it with hardware transcoding enabled while my wife and I went for a walk on my Pixel 3 and it had no issues in 5 minutes or so compared to the 10 seconds or less that it took the Roku or a browser to freeze up. I did just try turning it off and it doesn't seem to have a problem in the web with playback in that mode. The issue is just that I run E5-2630L V2's in the server so that's not really a viable option long term. ETA: Spoke too soon. Even with hardware transcoding off it froze up in Chrome after a few minutes. Edited April 27, 2020 by jlficken
jlficken 3 Posted April 27, 2020 Author Posted April 27, 2020 Given my success with the Pixel 3 I decided to try it on an ancient Nvidia Shield Tablet. I watched all 10 minutes of the 3440x1440 video at 165Mbps transcoded down to 720P 4Mbps utilizing hardware transcoding thru the P2000 with no issues. I also tried the Roku Emby beta app with no change. I'm not honestly sure what to try next?
jlficken 3 Posted April 28, 2020 Author Posted April 28, 2020 Emby Theater on my laptop also freezes.
jlficken 3 Posted April 28, 2020 Author Posted April 28, 2020 I had my parents try it with their Roku with throttling off and it actually even freezes even when the whole episode has been transcoded. It's so confusing.....
Luke 42080 Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 ETA: Spoke too soon. Even with hardware transcoding off it froze up in Chrome after a few minutes. Can we look at an example of this? It's possible that it's now happening for a different reason. Thanks.
jlficken 3 Posted April 28, 2020 Author Posted April 28, 2020 I'll get a video of it in the morning and upload it to YouTube. Not to be a jerk but I did install Jellyfin on UnRAID as well and it seems to work fine with the same file that Emby keeps freezing on. I also tested the Emby Roku app against the Jellyfin server and it works just fine as well. It's just confusing.
jlficken 3 Posted April 28, 2020 Author Posted April 28, 2020 Here are a couple of videos. The short one is on Auto and it freezes but the counter doesn't keep going which is a new behavior. The longer one is set to 1080 30Mbps and it seems fine. I am curious as to why I can't direct play the video though? They haven't finished encoding yet on YouTube so give it a little bit as they are at 360P currently. This one freezes - This one doesn't - Thanks for your help!!!! If I can get anything else let me know. ffmpeg-transcode-71017a05-9348-42d2-b9d4-95e699333d09_1.txt ffmpeg-transcode-a97b6dd0-e045-46d5-9ff1-e5a4e0a63a14_1.txt ffmpeg-transcode-1ef1bc38-a1bc-4cfc-af74-c15f63bd1007_1.txt ffmpeg-transcode-53145eb0-dd2d-44db-914f-92d08ea502da_1.txt embyserver.txt
jlficken 3 Posted April 28, 2020 Author Posted April 28, 2020 Here's another sample. I just uploaded it so it may take a few minutes to process. embyserver.txt ffmpeg-transcode-84636736-a1e7-4325-9948-5f92d12911b0_1.txt ffmpeg-transcode-b8fd5fbd-4759-4399-bb0e-601f61bcda58_1.txt
jlficken 3 Posted May 7, 2020 Author Posted May 7, 2020 Yeah it's still happening as of a 4 or 5 days ago. Since I couldn't get it figured out and my parents need to be able to transcode to save data as they are on 4G I installed Plex for them to use. I have a Lifetime Plex Pass as well as the Lifetime Emby Premiere Subscription. Plex doesn't seem to have this issue in our testing...no idea why. Hopefully I'll get it figured out at some point as I left Plex a few years ago because I like Emby more. I just don't know what else to try. Nothing's perfect.
Luke 42080 Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 @jlficken have you updated to Emby Server 4.4.3?
jlficken 3 Posted June 11, 2020 Author Posted June 11, 2020 21 minutes ago, Luke said: @jlficken have you updated to Emby Server 4.4.3? I did, however, the issue seems to persist...kind of. It still freezes during playback, however, now the dashboard also shows that playback stopped. It also stops transcoding after the buffer gets to about 2 minutes. ffmpeg-transcode-0adbc10f-efc0-46f0-ba6e-998993cd82ec_1.txt
jlficken 3 Posted June 21, 2020 Author Posted June 21, 2020 (edited) I don't know if something else has changed but the video with a native 165Mbps bitrate played successfully at my brother's house on a Roku from start to finish at 5.9Mbps. I also tried it on Android over the cell network and it seemed to run fine for about 10 minutes. Hopefully this is now resolved. Edited July 8, 2020 by jlficken
