Can't play media over an IPSEC site to site connection

Hello,

 

I have set up a new S2S IPSEC tunnel to route traffic to where my servers are. I use split DNS to ensure traffic headed to my servers domains gets pushed down the tunnel. There is no NAT envolved and the traffic goes through the same reverse proxy as if it was oringinating from the internet. But I have also tried direct connections to the server with its IP.

 

Everything works okay except emby. On the Android Web App, Android Mobile App and LG WebOS TV App media will get displayed, but nothing will play - the circle will just keep going around in circles. On desktop, sometimes things play sometimes they don't...

 

Any ideas how I can fix it?

have you checked the server log?

Yes I have had a look, I can't see any errors - but I don't really know what I'm looking for!

 

 

10.33.0.11 is emby server

 

10.34.1.12 is the Android Phone

Bump?!

 

I can confirm this is still an issue. I used another domain name which isn't split so therefore returned my servers public IP and emby could play content, this traffic bypassed the tunnel. Traffic in the tunnel still has issues for emby only.

Is the WAN address in the Networks settings (off the Dashboard menu) correct?

In-Home (LAN) access: http://10.33.0.11:80

 

Remote (WAN) access: https://media.domain.co.uk:443

 

Yes, the WAN address is my domain.

 

When on my network, the DNS server returns my reverse proxy servers local IP, but when on the public internet it returns the proxy servers public IP.

 

If the client is on my LAN or remote, it should always use the domain to access the server (https://media.domain.co.uk:443)

I wonder if Emby is telling the client where to get the stream to play, but is resolving the name before passing it to the client - so the client gets sent the LAN address even if remote.  I'd try putting the external IP in there explicitly.

When I am at the remote site I want the client to get the LAN address so that traffic goes through the IPSEC tunnel... This works as I can see a local IP in all the logs, but nothing will play!

 

 

When I add a server with the external IP everything works, but this is a work around not a fix!

I have looked into this more.

 

To troubleshoot I have removed split DNS for emby. That means when I request emby.domain.co.uk or insecure.emby.domain.co.uk my reverse proxys public IP is returned.

 

When I am at the remote site, the android App gets the server info from emby.domain.co.uk, then trys to connect to the LAN address returned in the JSON.

 

This local connection is successfull as I have a site to site tunnel. The app then bypasses the reverse proxy and connects straight to the emby server via the tunnel. Which is good, that's what I want.

 

But I still cannot play anything on an emby app.

 

I have recoreded the logs for in the tunnel and out of the tunnel when trying to play something

 

For some reason when connecting locally through the tunnel the POST to PlaybackInfo never gets a response and the client dosen't do anything other than go around in circles.

It seemed that there was an issue with the MSS in the TCP packet, this meant it was getting fragmented over the tunnel.

 

By setting MSS clamping to a lower value on the IPsec Tunnel the client can now play videos across the tunnel.

 

Thanks all for the help, was an interesting thing to debug - I finally found the problem by capturing packets on my router and loading them up in wireshark and seeing that there were tcp previous segment not captured errors.
