Question regarding emby connect.

Hypothetically speaking if I shared some movies with random people via emby connect, would any of them be able to get my IP address in anyway?

For instance if I was sharing Disney movies with someone that worked at Disney. Could they get my IP address and send me a copyright infringement notice even if they are only connected to my server via Emby connect?

I guess what I mean is. Have any law firms contacted you guys and asked you to give out IP's? And are you capable/would you do so?

Whatever the "WAN access" value on your dashboard is will be the address/domain reported to the connect service and will be provided to any client that requests the information

Hypothetically speaking, you shouldn't be sharing copyrighted content with random people :).

Your question is a little vague though because you cannot "share some movies" without giving someone a log in to your server and they cannot access your server without knowing its address.  Or, were you thinking of some other way of sharing?

People give me their emby connect names and I add them.

Have you guys ever had to give out IP's per a copyright legal request?

You should not share your content with people you do not know.

We have never given anyone any IP addresses but we wouldn't have to.  If they have access to your server then they know it.

All emby connect does is keep track of the LAN/WAN addresses listed in the dashboard of your server; then when a client device asks, it hands the last known addresses out so that client can try to connect.

It does nothing to obscure your true IP.

That's your responsibility through services like a VPN or cloudflare.

Right but if someone connects to my server through app.emby.media they don't see my IP address in the url. So I'm saying if someone contacted you guys and asked for the IP address to my server would you give it to them?

You don't see the server ip/domaim name in the url, but it is being passed to the clients browser which is then using it to directly connect to your server. (without changing the url in the browser) That traffic isn't routed through embys public servers, that's a direct connection between the client and your server, which requires exposing your IP to that client.

To see for yourself:

Open chrome, open the developer tools (ctrl+shift+I), go the the 'Sources' tab;

Then open app.emby.media amd connect to your account + server.

One of the sources listed will be either the address listed under 'remote (WAN) access:' or 'In-home (LAN) access:' on your server dash.

There's things you can do to make that WAN address hard to trace directly back to your public IP address (cloudflare, vpn), but that's up to you. Emby connect doesn't do anything to hide your ip.

Thanks. Yeah I'll probably set it up with cloudflare. Do you know how to do that with windows? And do I need to purchase a domain name for it? Thanks again.

No.  But as demonstrated above, they would already be able to find it.

You are right they could find it but it isn't common knowledge for people to "inspect the page" to find the IP address. They would normally send a letter to the company operating the website which in this case is http://app.emby.media/ or at least that's the url that is shown.

So I was just curious what you guys would do if that happened.

emby connect doesn't hide your server, and if you don't setup cloudflare correctly neither does it.     gotta' know what you are doing if you don't want to go to jail lol....   OR just don't do it to start with.   :)

for example, connect using emby connect via chrome browser, hit ctrl+shift+I  then on the split window click the "Sources" tab,  reload your emby page,   you should see app.emby.media,  gstatic.com, maybe another one or two,  and your server address listed there, no need for anyone to ask emby.
