Hi,

 

i have a z390 taichi ultimate mb with i9-9900k with intel uhd 630 for transcoding using emby. I do have 8 different sata drives (2xSSD - cache,OS and the others are 2-12tb sata wd red drives (5400rpm)). Now im planning to get three m.2 drives (OS, Cache and one for simple gaming like Civ 5 and 6). Ive read following regarding my mb:

 

M2_1, SATA3_0 and SATA3_1 share lanes. If either one of them is in use, the others will be disabled.
If M2_2 is occupied by a SATA-type M.2 device, SATA3_3 will be disabled.
M2_3, SATA3_4 and SATA3_5 share lanes. If either one of them is in use, the others will be disabled.

 

That means, i will have 5 less sata slots to use...in this case i would like to use a raid controller to expand the slots but i dont know which one, if SAS2 or SAS3 or anything else. It should be as fast as it was plugged into mb, or higher speeds than that...is it correct that i can use a SAS to SATA cable which 1xSAS will have 4xSATA plugs? I dont care about money so much i think that max. 300€ for that expansion card would be ok. As much sata slots as possible without any loss of speed...

 

Someone can help me to choose wise?

so you're trying to add spinning disks to an array?  or you're trying to create an array out of your ssd?  If the former, just pick up a cheap LSI controller and flash it to IT mode.

Not exactly...

 

Now i have two SSDs (one for OS and second one for Emby metadata and cache...), and then i have 6 other spin drives 2-12tb full of media u know 

 

I want to add or replace the SSDs for M.2 drives, which will take 5 SATA plugs on the mainboard...the SSDs will be used as external drives, but i will buy another 10 or 12tb drives...i dont know how much of them, but i want a ''futureproof'' HBA card, that will handle at least the 8 sata spin drives with full speed...thats all. Maybe i will add a SSD drive if they will be cheaper.... so a LSI Broadcom SAS 9300-8i would be ok or overkill? ...because ive read that some HBA cards have speeds only 3gb/s for each port...sorry for my math and if im wrong
