ArnoRoggo 1 Posted April 9, 2020 Posted April 9, 2020 It seems like 4K-movies only have PGS format subtitles. Every hardware player sends the decoded signal to the TV. Why can't the Emby player do that?
Luke 42078 Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Most devices don't support PGS subtitles, that's why they require video transcoding.
ArnoRoggo 1 Posted April 10, 2020 Author Posted April 10, 2020 ANY hardware player that plays 4K can also read PSG. Or not? Again: 4K movies all have PSG subtitles. So it would be nice if Emby did something for the new age.
neik 873 Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Iirc the 4k FireTV cannot read PGS's although it plays 4k files. Does clients which read PGSs play them just fine, e.g. Mi Box or Shield TV.
ArnoRoggo 1 Posted April 10, 2020 Author Posted April 10, 2020 I was not talking about the TV, but about the DVD / BD player. And that Emby doesn't want to know anything about the age of 4K subtitles (= PSG).
ebr 16184 Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Iirc the 4k FireTV cannot read PGS's although it plays 4k files. Yes it can - as long as everything else about the content is direct- playable. I was not talking about the TV, but about the DVD / BD player. And that Emby doesn't want to know anything about the age of 4K subtitles (= PSG). No streaming media has subtitles in this format and that is why most streaming devices don't support them.
ArnoRoggo 1 Posted April 10, 2020 Author Posted April 10, 2020 If we were talking just about streaming films, everything would be fine. Then an Emby player would be enough. Now there are still the bought and ripped films for which Emby offers a database system. It is unfortunate that the administrators close their eyes.
Luke 42078 Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 It is unfortunate that the administrators close their eyes. We're not closing our eyes, we're just telling you what the devices support and what they don't support.
Deathsquirrel 745 Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 If you use PGS subs you're going to be limited to certain client devices or dealing with transcoding. I know, I use them all the time. Device support for that format is pretty limited but I haven't had much trouble with the Android TV client on my shields, and none at all with Emby Theater. I expect Kodi would also handle them but I'm not installing that thing on my PC. SRT subs have much better support, in general, with client devices. 1
ArnoRoggo 1 Posted April 10, 2020 Author Posted April 10, 2020 Dear "Advanced Member": I would ALWAYS like to use SRT subs. But the 4K discs ONLY have PGS subs. OK? Dear Mr. Bazinga: Initially, I thought Emby was a system to be developed. I understand now, that you are not interested in communicating the matter to your developers. Have a nice time. I will no longer contact you. 1
ArnoRoggo 1 Posted April 10, 2020 Author Posted April 10, 2020 I want no longer be contacted. Please respect that. 1
pwhodges 2012 Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Why do you feel this is an Emby problem? He is conflating the Emby app on a device with the device itself, I presume. Paul

Literally everyone who rips media has to deal with this. 1
Happy2Play 9780 Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Since most players are not DVD/Blu Ray players they do not support graphical subtitle. So Emby does the only thing is can, it burns the subtitles in.
ebr 16184 Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Although, as stated previously, many of our apps do support them - as long as the rest of the characteristics of the media allow direct play.
Happy2Play 9780 Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Although, as stated previously, many of our apps do support them - as long as the rest of the characteristics of the media allow direct play. Is this documented anywhere?
ebr 16184 Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Is this documented anywhere? Yes but it just isn't as simple as a checklist (like a marketing spec sheet). There are so many variables involved - but the gist is what I said - as long as the device can direct play the item, the PGS subs are supported on Android TV, Fire TV and Theater (and I'm pretty sure the mobile apps as well). 1
