Optional Network Paths - What's the benefit?

I stumbled across the Knowledge Base article but it doesn't really explain why anyone would want to use this feature or what it achieves.

Hi.  That is a setting that dates all the way back to our beginnings.  At this point, it will only be of value if you are using one of the HTPC apps (Theater Desktop, EMC or Kodi).  In that case, those apps will attempt to play your item directly from the file system instead of through the server.
