RAM Transcoding

Hi,

I'm just curious about RAM Transcoding. I set up a virtual RAM disk for 3GB as I have 8GB.

A) Is it a bad idea, do I need more RAM.

B) I noticed early into the movie the RAMdisk was nearly full. IS this how it works does it fill up, then empty, then fill etc?

C) I have an Intel i7-4770 paired with it and around 4 users but most direct play. Just wondering for the few that may transcode 1080p files.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, transcoding is usually cpu limited, not disk limited, so generally speaking this shouldn't help too much. Maybe if the current location is on a really slow storage device it might help, but that's probably it.

Having said that, there are some users who swear by it, but in theory, it shouldn't make too much of a difference.

Interesting. Im gonna try this out. Any extra speed is welcome. :D Im running tons of raid drives in a raid 5 setup, and its really damn slow sometimes when i move files, and that interrupts the streaming for some peeps.

But since Emby maintains the entire transcode of the item being played, you will need enough space to contain everything being transcoded.  So I would think 3Gb would not cover any Movies or Episodes depending on their size.

So i guess it depends on the actual file size of the movie or episode your hosting? damn i need alot of ram then.. Or i might just use some space on my Nvme OS drive..

Yes as Emby does not do chunk transcoding like the other guys.  It has been mentioned in other topics "possible in the future".  Or even possibly designating a specific Transcode folder size limit.

Well thanks for the really great info. :)

I'm still interested in putting my transcoding temp files in a 8 GB RAMdisk, rather than putting them on my SSD.

please keep this on the change request list.

thanks

You can do this today - just add a new path under 'Transcoding | Transcoding temporary path' and set it to your RAM drive.  If you mean the size limit, then I guess you'll need to wait for that.

The other major advantage of using RAM is of course you are not 'wearing out' your SSD by doing huge write cycles..  :)
