2 Emby locations, 1 storage

I'm going to be doing some traveling.  Right now I have emby server running at home with my media on an external USB drive.  I would like to be able to take this external drive with me and use it on my laptop, but have it keep watched status on shows/movies I have seen etc.

Accessing my server at home remotely is not an option for me.

The one thing I'm thinking is all manual and I would be ok with it as it doesn't seem that involved.

1.  Have the same version emby running on home PC and laptop.

2.  Have usb drive using same drive letter when plugged in to each.

3.  Copy the most recent emby-server folder over to whichever location I'm using my external drive with each time I switch.

Any other ideas/suggestions ways to do this?

Thanks

One thing you could look into is purchasing a nVidia Shield, connect your drive to the Shield and install and configure Emby server onto this.

Then, use the laptop to connect to the Sheild via the web interface and watch your media this way.

Then when you get home, just use the Sheild as your server at home too.

May be the easiest, most compact and powerful server available in this situation.

Networking wise may take some testing to accomplish a setup when travelling, you won't be connected to a router, etc.  This may be the hardest part of the setup, unless you want to get a small switch and connect both wired.

Also, you can install the Emby client on the Sheild and have both the server and the client on the one device and just use the HDMI from the Shield to any TV and there's your media server when travelling.

I have not used it in quite some time, but perhaps the TRAKT plugin might be an option. You can set up a TRAKT account and link it to your Emby Server library. Watched status will be synched between Emby and TRAKT and you could then 'update' your library from TRAKT when you are traveling and then do the same when you return home.

Someone that uses it daily may be able to provide some guidance on how or IF this is possible across two instances of Emby server. I would think you just need to be careful about what overwrites what as you perform any synching or updating between home use Emby server and traveling Emby server.

Sheild is not an option, I don't want to buy anymore devices.  This will be used in a Van/RV as I travel.  No network or wifi.  Just a laptop hooked up to an LCD TV.

What are you still struggling with?

What are you still struggling with?

Nothing yet, haven't tried my idea yet of how to do it.  Was waiting to see if anyone else used the same solution or something different before I tried it.

Not sure on what I actually need to copy over.  Like most other windows programs, you can't just copy them from one machine to another.

You could just use Emby's Download Feature to download what you want to play onto the laptop, running the laptop as a client.

I have the potential to be on the road for months, so I want to have all my TV shows/movies with me.  Who knows what I will be in the mood to watch or binge on :D.

Thanks though for the suggestion.

So back to this for me.  I have now installed Emby on my laptop.  A few questions.

Can I use my same premier key?

What directories/folders should I copy over for all my settings/configurations, shows watched etc.?

Thanks

Hi,

Yes you can use the same premiere key for your laptop.

Check out the knowledge base article on Backup located here https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001159936-backup

About half way down is a section on manual backup/restore which contains the information you want to copy over for users status.

If you have any specific questions let us know.

Bringing this back up, using the Emby backup plugin is working for me except one issue.  My collections I have manually made don't get transferred.  Tags do though.

So on one PC I have say a tag "xyz" and also a collection with the same name "xyz".  When I do a backup and restore to my other PC, the tag xyz is there, but not the collection.

Is there a way to also copy/transfer the manually created collection names?

Thanks

Yes it doesn't backup collections but if you use the auto-box plugin all the conventional boxset will get created for you.
Playlists do get backed up however.

I have the auto box set plugin, so yes all those collections are there.  I'm just missing about 10 I have create manually.

Also on one PC the collections are blue images that look like bluray cases with discs showing to the side, on the other they are green and say Box Set at the top.  I like the bluray looking one better but can't figure out how to get that on my other PC.

That should be CoverArt plugin settings.

If your tags get transferred and you made your collections based on them, you might check SmartPlaylists plugin and run it based on tags, giving you same net effect?

Gone through all my settings and can't find out what is different.  The only difference is the one I like on the right is my main PC that has gone through many upgrades etc of emby over the years and the one on the left is a brand new install, but all same plugins and config backed up and transferred.

Did you actually enter your CoverArt plugin settings and look under Treatments>BoxSet?

You can manually back up your collections (small files and folder) if you like and they would be on Windows typically:
C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\data\collections

Switch the username above as needed.

Using tags and the SmartPlaylists Plugin would be a great way to go about this as well!

Yes and both are set to this, so neither match what I'm seeing.

I'm not seeing the smartplaylists under the plugin catalog.

It's here in the forum as not all plugins are in the catalog.
