Emby permissions

Morning guys

I need some clarification on library access permissions for folders.

I got a load of movie folders setup, something like:

Movies

--Movies

--Kids

--Archive

--4k

--Documentaries

Anyway I've set all these movie folders and added them all under a single library called movies. As you might guess, some of these overlap (like movies and 4k). As some people can't play 4k, I give permissions to these folders based on their connection speed. However that doesn't seem to apply. They still see 4k and play 4k movies, forcing a heavy load transcode on the server that wouldn't happen otherwise if their permissions were working correctly.

I'm using this plugin, https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/63643-automatic-version-grouping-for-movies/, however I expected emby permissions to take precedence and them just seeing movies and versions for folders they got access to. It doesn't matter what folders I tick, the moment a folder containing a movie with different versions is selected they also get access to all the other versions in the other folders.

Could someone please clarify why this is happening?

Thanks in advance!

To add to this, I'm also not seeing emby selecting the best version automatically.

This family member came around yesterday and I was trying to resolve the problem. Ticked boxes, unticked boxes, no dice. Even so I was kinda hoping that with internet streaming set to auto it would at least select the version that is more adequate to the phone (device being used). However it kept defaulting to the 4k with HDR and atmos, despite the phone not possessing the capability to play this.

I've also tried restricting the internet bitrate on the user settngs, no dice there.

Someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks again

Regarding this  link:https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001160108-new-folder-based-access-control

I have this exact same setup and have unticked the necessary folders containing 4k content however users can still see and play 4k content independently of whatever folder restrictions were applied to them!

This is quite frustrating as all my media is properly organised and I was hoping for emby to do folder access control but that doesn't seem to be happening.

Thanks in advance!

Yes this is an edge case regarding multi-version that we'll look at resolving in a future update. Thanks.

We'd have to go over a specific example. How to report a media playback issue. Thanks.

Hi Luke

The issue is not media playback. The user can play the media as the server has enough grunt to transcode 4K on the fly.

My issue is permissions. As per my link above and your support article this shouldn’t be happening.

I don’t understand your comment about this being an edge case. Your help article clearly describes the same scenario I have here. A movie library with different categories and me wanting to specific what each user has access to.

Thanks in advance

Out of curiosity would this be resolved by me setting up a different library with just 4K content ?

So you’d have two different libraries. One for movies and one for movies 4K.

Well it is when you said you thought it wasn't choosing the best version.

Well yes, it's definitely not choosing the best version. That user's device can't handle 4k and emby is for some reason defaulting to 4K anyway.

Regarding my second question, would creating 2 separate 4k libraries (movies/tv) resolve this issue?

Hi Luke

I've tried removing my 4k libraries under "Movies" and re-adding them as a brand new library called "Movies-4k". Same issue occurs.

I'm thinking this is due to the "Auto collections" plugin, however wouldn't expect this plugin to work across different libraries. Even if it did I would still hope for emby permissions to superseed a plugin.

Is there anyway this could be investigated? It should be fairly easy to replicate your end.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the harassment. Really want to move to emby full time so trying to get these niggles ironed out.

Hi Luke

Are you saying that this addon supersedes any permissions I have setup?

Kind regards

I'm saying the grouping that this plugin is doing does not currently respect user permissions. It is an edge case regarding multi-version that we'll look at resolving in a future update.

Thanks Luke that's what I wanted to confirm.

Any ETA for this, or when you might release it?

Kind regards

I see mention of this in the works on your latest beta:

Version:4.4.0.28-beta4.4.0.27-beta4.3.1.04.3.0.304.3.0.264.2.1.04.2.0.404.1.1.04.1.0.264.0.2.04.0.1.04.0.0.23.5.3.03.5.2.03.5.1.03.5.0.0

* Fix OMX profile reporting
* Fix user access not being enforced with multi-version movies

Is this what we referring to here?
