How to set default bitrate?

I took my Shield on the road, and set the max bitrate while watching a video through the osd to 5mb/s.

I have been home for a week, tried to watch a 4k video and noticed it was transcoding. I can set the bitrate to 100 and it will work right. But every time I restart a video it keeps defaulting back to 5mb/s.

Any thoughts? I have rebooted the Shield.

Edit## Tried changing the setting in the main settings from Auto to 100 MB/s. But it still wants to default to 5.

Toggling the settings a couple times and killing the app finally got things back to normal.

Hi there, have you set the quality in the app's settings?

That really doesn't make much sense... if you set it in the playback settings to 100, that's what it would be.  On Auto - it may be variable.  Also, the settings on your server could impact this as well.

Well thats what was happening, don't know what to tell you, I am referring to the global setting, see below.

Yes, it was on auto (before the trip because I never touched it). Set to 100 didn't help. Back to auto and killing the app fixed it.

Just to be clear setting in the OSD on a one time basis would fix the file playing but opening it or any other file again would default back to 5mb.

What do you mean exactly by "Set to 100 didn't help" ?

I went into the global setting for playback. In the main settings of the app. Set the bitrate to 100. Went to play a video and it was at 5 MB. I then used the gear icon in the osd and set it to 100 there and it worked right, stopped transcoding and HDR kicked in.

But when I stopped that movie and tried something else or the same one it kept defaulting back to 5.

I repeated the initial step above but set the global bitrate to auto, where it originally was, and got the same result. Force closing the app finally got things working correctly. A reboot of the shield hadn't solved it.

How were you determining the bitrate as 5?  What is the bitrate of the item you were playing?

It was a UHD Blu-ray remux. So it caught my attention that color was all washed out. Went to stats for nerds and saw it was transcoding. When I went to the gear icon to change the bitrate each time it was set to 5mb/s. It keep defaulting back to that on its own.
