Constant Stuttering Remote Playback

Well I wouldn't be bringing this up but the google drive things do not work at all so people have been transcoding and streaming from my server directly.

 

The issue is if the quality is nearly anything above 3Mbps it will stutter, stop, continue and repeat. This is not with just one file but every file, remote connections are the ones with the issue.

 

Locally(internal network) I can play / transcode everything without issue.

 

Assumed it was my ISP, so spent a week making sure my speeds are correct, upload tests do between 30-40 all the time, but yet somehow Emby cannot even produce a constant stream at 4mbps?

 

Went through the SSL process and purchased an SSL just to make sure the connections were secure and not being throttled, nope, still issue.

 

At this point what do I do, because this is on a raid ssd vm, 2690v2 cpus with p400 passthrough HW accell.

 

The issue occurs with and without the HW accell enabled on both Linux, and windows.

 

 

I really need some help here because the server is practically unusable when it used to be able to playback 17Mbps to people fine.

Hi there, you customized the server crf setting. First thing you should do anytime you have this type of problem is change those sorts of things back to default. The way you customized it will in fact contribute to the problem that you're seeing.

 

If that doesn't help, then I would suggest lowering the in-app quality setting. Stuttering generally means that the bitrate is just too high.

Just did this.

 

Results in the same playback issues, even when click downloading a movie it uploads far slower (less than 1Mbps) then if I just sent the file over the internet to mega ,google etc.

In house everything moves at 10Gbe no issues. How can it be that only Emby is affected by this but all other applications can utilize my full speed on the same machines?

This is a good test. This means something is limiting the bandwidth on you. It could potentially be ISP throttling.

Wouldn't SSL avoid this? Or will I have to go full VPN?

 

I have PIA currently, but would purchase others at this point.

I don't know if SSL would do that. It could be straight up throttling based on the port number. So you could try a non-default public facing port. Otherwise you may want to use a VPN.
