DTS 5.1 Music wav format not playing.

Recommended Posts

I moved to emby couple of days ago.

I added a DTS 5.1 wav music file to the library and when I play it, it plays static noise.

Please note my AV receiver supports DTS, TrueHd etc..I have enabled pass thru.

Also, all the movies in TrueHD and DTS HD-MA play just fine.

It's a 1 hour 05 mins long music file (full album in one file)

The same file plays well on Kodi. Absolutely no problem there.

Also I have other surround sound music in flac format which plays well on emby. The DTS 5.1 wav on the other hand just plays static sound.

Please help. I don't want to use multiple apps for different kind of media.

Hi, dts in a wave? Never heard of that. Where did those come from?

I have no issues playing the test file in the linked topic.  It is transcoded of course in browser and ET.

The test file is from someone else. That's not the content I am trying to play.

I pointed to that thread because he wasn't aware of DTS in wav.

I was commenting that that DTS wav file plays for me.  Does it play for you?

Yeah, that doesn't make any sense at all.  WAV is supposed to be raw audio - not compressed codecs like DTS or AC3 etc.

Why would one put DTS into a WAV file?

Frosty had the same problem with static

Converting to mka file and they will play although transcoded to aac

He can add any extra details :)

I've only tested this on my Shield, so not sure how it plays on other devices.

I have several DVD music albums and they are all DTS 5.1 so was hoping I could use Emby to play them.  They are very popular in the stores now

I tried just raw .DTS files, I also remuxed them (no conversion) in a WAV container and MKA container and a few others.  I've had different results based on the container.  Some containers only produced static, some I got no audio at all.

MKA was the only one which actually plays in ATV though it was transcoded to AAC.

However, VLC seemed to play the file(s) in more types of containers and not transcoded (or at least it didn't sound transcoded).

BTW I asked someone to test one of my MKA files in Plex.  He said the Plex screen said it was direct playing, but if you looked at the actual logs it was also transcoding to AAC.  So it may be a limitation of exoplayer.

Only thing that bugs me is, kodi is playing it just fine. And I don't want to use kodi and emby for different media types.

I'll share the link to my file by tomorrow. It's 600 MB.

I was able to get mine split into individual tracks if you just want one or two tracks to play with

DTS in wave is a thing. It can be written to CD to make surround "DTS CD"s which will play in any DTS-capable DVD player. I have done this in the past. However, most wave file players will not do the analysis to detect the DTS header. It may be worth replacing the wav extension by dts - this will stop the file playing in players that don't understand them.

I've tried .dts also and got an ear full of static.  At least in ATV it does that.  VLC seems to have no issue with .dts on the Shield

And what emby apps have you tried this in?

Posted

Windows Media Player and Google (playing directly from that link) just plays static with that file.

Try either on VLC or Kodi.

Hmm why does the wav file here direct play (static) and the one in the other topic transcodes and plays correctly?

Posted (edited)

Two things,

I renamed the wav file to just "The Division Bell" (the link I have shared has the renamed wav file) and the name of the .cue file remained the same.

After doing this, even kodi couldn't play back. I changed the name back to what it was earlier, same as the .cue file name (just like a subtitle file and a movie file in a folder need to be same).

Now, kodi is able to recognize different tracks from the whole album in one file and able to play it just fine.

Adding to your observation, yes, on plex it transcodes and plays in two channel.

Apart from able to support dts in wav, support for .cue is crucial too.

Please rename the wav file to "Pink Floyd - The Division Bell [5.1 DTS CD-DA]" and play it on kodi.

I tried installing emby on kodi and see if this works. The folder was NOT scanned to the library at all. Actual emby app at least picked up the folder and couldn't play.

Wow! Cool.

Just one question though, just the dts wav or .cue support too?
