Amazon Firestick problem

So multiple people with firesticks are starting to have this problem when using my server. I attached a picture. I am pretty sure it is caused by transcoding, but was wondering if anyone experienced something similar. These people are not very tech savvy so it is hard to troubleshoot the problem with them. What information can I provide to help solve this issue? Thanks!

Hi.  Yes, please provide those details.  Are these HEVC videos?

Tell your users to use the "Playback Correction" option under the cog menu during playback.

Apologies, the person having the issue has went out of town. So I am going to put it on a Firestick I have and attempt to recreate the issue so I can provide you with that information. I do not believe it was an HEVC video.

So I was able to reproduce the error, and it is a bit weird. I have remote clients limited to 2MB/s, which means most videos transcode. So I did some testing with that, and if I bring the limit down to 1MB/s or up to 3MB/s it works fine. So it only has this problem when limited to 2MB/s or 1.5MB/s. I will PM you my logs.

Edit - I did try and use the playback correction and it did not fix anything. The only way to fix it is to make it not transcode, or change the limit to 1MB/s or 3MB/s.

I PMed them to ebr, should I PM them to you? I would prefer not to just post them hah. Not sure what identifying information they could contain.

I got the pm. Thanks.

I got the pm. Thanks.

No problem, let me know if I can provide anymore information!

As a test, if you disable hardware acceleration in the server transcoding section, does that help?

Yes, turning off hardware acceleration does fix the issue, though I would prefer to have it on!

@@JoeBob0131 - I might, but you'd need to add me to the PM.

Looks like you were added. And just to confirm, the issue is only happening on my Firestick when limiting video to 1.5MB/s or 2MB/s, which is weird! I tested on my shield and it doesnt experience the same issue. Also the issue appears regardless of remote or local connection.

Thanks, I've seen it now. I agree that it's a weird issue.

I have a few ideas we could check for:

First one: The "bandwidth selection" does not only select a bandwidth but also a resolution.

What you could do is to enable "Stats for nerds" and watch the resolution in different cases.

When it's the same when hw or sw encoding, then that would be a dead end, though.

For the the other things to check, you would need to install the Diagnostics Plugin: https://mediabrowser.github.io/Emby.DiagnosticsPlugin/

Then we can try a few things and do some analysis on the generated hls segments...

So I checked the resolutions, and they are the same in HW and SW transcode. The resolution that creates the problem is 720x405 which is what it runs at when I set it to 2MB/s.

1280x720 @ 3MB/s and 640x360 @ 1MB/s both run fine. SW transcode also does not have an issue with any resolution.

I can install that Plugin, what information would you like me to provide and what scenarios? Just the one where it doesnt work?

Are you sure about "720x405"?

Because in the log you sent, it was "720x404"

Yup! That is what the stats for nerds window says.

I did just check the log for the transcode and it does say 704 though. So maybe a discrepancy between the two.

How does sw transcoding compare?

How does sw transcoding compare?

sw transcoding has no issue and displays at the same resolution.

I meant whether you see the same discrepancy of resolutions in case of sw transcoding?

Gotcha, yea, the log still shows 720x404.

OK, then it's probably not a problem with the resolution.

Let's move on:

First test: In the Diagnostics plugin, activate "Legacy Command line building" and retry.
