carpe diem 0 Posted February 18, 2020 Posted February 18, 2020 I have been using the Shield as an Emby server for the past 2 weeks and even though I never used the premium features, I will pay the lifetime for the great work. Before the purchase, I would like to know if there's a way to use Emby like a media player on the shield without internet? Thank you
ebr 16184 Posted February 18, 2020 Posted February 18, 2020 It should work without internet but you'd need to purchase the unlock or allow an internet connection every few weeks to validate. It won't work without a network, however, so, even though you don't need to be connected to the internet, the device will have to be connected to a local network - even though you are using the app locally.
Jdiesel 1431 Posted February 18, 2020 Posted February 18, 2020 You can't connect to localhost without a network on the Shield TV?
Luke 42079 Posted February 18, 2020 Posted February 18, 2020 No. You don't need an internet connection, but you do need a local network.

carpe diem 0 Posted February 18, 2020 Author Posted February 18, 2020 Thank you everyone for the answer.
Jdiesel 1431 Posted February 18, 2020 Posted February 18, 2020 (edited) So a possible solution might be to pick up a cheap wireless router, or even a tiny travel router, and have the Shield TV connect to it. The router itself wouldn't need to be connected to the internet but would be used to create a local network specifically for Emby. This would also allow you to manage the server from a phone or computer and do things like remote playback controller. I don't know if there are any travel routers that are able to run completely off of USB power but you should be able to find something that is small and compliments the Shield TV as far as portability goes. I assume that is what you are interested in, something you can quickly pack up and take with to you places with limited or no internet access.https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Wireless-Portable-Router-TL-MR3020/dp/B01N5RCZQH?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_9&th=1&psc=1 Edited February 19, 2020 by Jdiesel 1
Spaceboy 2573 Posted February 19, 2020 Posted February 19, 2020 Yeah the tp link travel routers can run off usb, I’ve got an earlier model if the one you linked to, it works well
