Transcoding; why?

I would have thought I'd always be able to direct play via a Shield TV with 400 down ethernet connection.

The transcode makes everything choppy and it's hit or miss on what media requires the transcode (4k, 1080, etc.).

I had thought the reason was because I have Sonos that doesn't play well with anything over DD audio, but can that really be the issue?

Your system does not support DTS, it's just transcoding audio because it's unsupported. It shouldn't be choppy.

Let's try this instead

I'm unfamiliar with the ffmpeg log or how to pull it.

It would appear that your sound equipment does not support DTS.

In the andrpid advanced audio preferences on your shield you can see what the audio device supports assuming you left the setting on auto.

On the server, click the gear icon in the top right corner.  Under Advanced click logs.  There should be a ffmpeg log associated with the remux of your movie.  Click on the file and it should come up in text on a new tab.

The problem is it's definitely choppy...pausing for several seconds frequently. I'm not sure what I can do on my end to fix it.

Your server is on your local network. Is it a remote server? What happens if you select a lower quality? Maybe your download speed is right, but server upload is not enough.
