Moving movies to new folder

Recommended Posts

Posted

My movies are in folders corresponding to categories (drama, comedy, horror, etc.)

Yet, now, there are so many movies in the comedy folder that I would like to split it in two. I will create a new folder for classic / old school comedies.

When I move a movie from a folder to another one, it is regarded as a new one by Emby, and I need to change the metadata when it’s not recognized correctly. Is there a way to move some movies from a folder to another one and to prevent such an issue?

Thank you

It sounds like you do not save metadata/images with media so no.

I guess if you know databases and were willing to edit the paths directly it could work.  But I would ensure I had a complete backup of Emby before I did this.

I'm used to mySQL databases, so maybe I could if it's not too different from it.

Where's the emby database located ?

Look at Paths on the Dashboard to get the general location.

Emby-Server\programdata\data\library.db ensure you maintain a good copy of the database

Thank you for the details, I found it and found the way to work on the content.

Yet, the structure is not as simple as I thougt. Thus, I will live with the need to re-edit the metadata after moving movies in another folder.

But your instructions were helpful, and when I will have the desire to explore the database for any other need, I will know how to do :) Thanks again !

My question is why do this? You can keep all your movies in one folder, namely <drive letter>:/Movies and then just use Emby's Genre Sort feature to sort by Comedy or by Action or whatever you want..

Because I defined the genres based on the movies I have (for example, I have only a few suspense movie, but a lot of comedies, thus I subdivided them in several genres)

One folder = one genre, and I browse by folder

This is way easier and way faster to sort the movies the way I want

I would enable saving nfo files for the library and then you'll have metadata saved next to the media.

I supposed this is the fastest way to do it. editing the genre is movie by movie whereas you can move whole blocks of movies at once outside of Emby into whatever folder you desire.

@@Luke is this something that can be simplified in Emby?

The folders method doesn't work if you want movies to be able to have more than one genre, as they typically have.

That's my plan, in my "TV shows and documentaries" folder, as a lot of shows I have are rare, and I had to set up all the metadata and images manually.

Yet, the .nfo files option was off when I did it initially. How can I “regenerate” them ?

If you refresh the metadata on a title, that will generate an nfo file for it.
