concerns about Emby

Hello

I've been a plex user for a very long time and have shifted away due to their nature of no longer being customer focused.  They have stripped away features users want and have made their programming closed box to the normal user.  It appears that Emby is heading down the same path, what is Emby doing to avoid going down the same path?  Plex will likely be absorbed by another company or nonexistent in 5 years due to subs leaving at a record pace.

Hi there, we are not going down the same path, why do you feel that way? I would take a look at our community and see how responsive we are to our users.

3.6 release closed-source

Hi.  That has had absolutely no impact on our responsiveness to our users and has only helped our development efforts.

The path the other guys are going down is that of being a content provider and aggregator.  We have absolutely no plans in that direction.  We plan to stay a personal media server.

We are just as customer focused as we've always been, more than ever in fact because that is one of the things we decided would be our identify way back when we started.

I never complained about responsiveness, i'm concerned about closed source development as it begets what plex is today.

That really has nothing to do with the brand's identify. They could have gone in those same directions open source, and by the same token, we can still make our users happy being closed source.

While I generally prefer open source, I use and support LibreOffice and that is about as open source as it gets, I also think that some kinds of software do not really benefit from open source and video archiving and playing software is one that "should" be closed source so as not to introduce as many problems and speed development.

Also I do not begrudge Emby, or Plex for that matter, wanting to own the software they work so hard to produce.

Open or closed source is no reason, I believe, to choose between software of this type. As long as Emby continues their great customer service, even though they do not implement everything they way I want ;) , I will continue to use and support them as well.

Hi,

I'm not knocking Emby in any way, i'm just hoping things don't go downhill and get toxic like Plex.  Even their Reddit has become putrid...

Nonsense.  If that were the case these forums wouldn't be flooded with happy ex-Plex users.  You came here AFTER that change went into place for example.  Emby hasn't be an open source project for the entire time of our posting history.

I'm not going to re-litigate the decision to close their code, but it clearly hasn't resulted in any major change in direction for the team.

Negative sir/madam. Just because I wasn’t around for slavery doesn’t mean I don’t know it’s still a bad idea today.

Using your offensively ridiculous analogy, you should also be able RECOGNIZE slavery, having the benefit of hindsight.

Seriously, slavery?!?  If that's our comparison they don't even have an unpaid intern.

edit -- Dial it back, you don't want to jump straight to nazi analogies next.

It’s very sad the analogous nature of the comment is over shadowed by your need to be butthurt. There is no way to have a rational discussion with you. Goodbye.

I mean you could just go ahead and start coding your own from scratch, if you feel so self righteous about demanding everything you want or you'll toss vulgar analogies at people.

I'm going to lock this as it's getting too hostile for our family friendly community.
