That is a lot faster processor than mine and anything you're going to find in a Synology desktop model right now.  I assume he's building his own and using xpenology to load DSM

Not really, that processor is a Coffee Lake processor and I'm not seeing it in that table of alternative packages.  If I were to guess the sandybridge one may work, but that is really a guess.

Both sandybridge and haswell are available. When transcoding five HEVC 1080P movies at the same time, Sandybridge has stopped responding, and Haswell seems to be better.
