Question about transcoding

Emby is transcoding something that has direct network access locally but its also transcoding it so 90% of the screen is green. The video plays fine in VLC.

Here's what looks like the log segment.

I can't figure out what's going on. I've checked multiple videos from this batch of transcodes and all have the same problem.

The ORIGINAL 3 GB files I pulled off of DVD seem to work fine, however. I'm unsure why the newly trancoded ones are giving me a green screen.

Hi there, did you explore the stats feature in the video player to learn why it was transcoding?

Lighthammer

I'm not sure where you mean.

- Settings - > Statistics?

- Video -> Information?

- Something else?

The stats for nerds feature in the video player.

Isn't the issue the VC1?

The video is in HEVC. Both the original and the new one. The only difference is I brought the bit rate down from 10 to 6 and removed the Japanese Audio.

That being said, the video is completely fubared being transcoded from Emby. It runs fine in VLC.

What did the stats feature tell you?

No that looks like the media info on the detail screen. I mean the stats for nerds feature inside the video player. It will tell you why it's transcoding.

Hi.  Does that not explain it for you?

Reason for transcoding:
Video codec not supported

You are trying to play something in a web browser that the browser simply doesn't support.

You cannot compare a web browser to a video player app like VLC - their capabilities will be vastly different.

The problem is it does though.

But that still also doesn't explain why Emby is transcoding the video output as all green.

That is usually an indication of a hardware acceleration problem.  Have you tried disabling that or changing some of the options there?

Lighthammer

Do you mean under the hardware's settings or within emby?

Lighthammer

Then the answer would be yes.

There's no options I could conceive of in Nvidia's software or in Emby's software that would result in a mostly green output.

This is what its outputing --- and to be clear, this is ONLY on these videos:

These videos aren't using any dramatically different video settings then anything else on my server.

In this situation my next suggestion would be to check the version of the video drivers.

You tried different settings in our Hardware Acceleration options?

Making sure your drivers are up to date is key as well.

I tried shifting strictly NEVC and DX11 as well as having both enabled (which was the original setting).

That being said, it appears "DX11VA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080" works if its the only one enabled. "NVDEC GeForce GTX 1080" doesn't work at all for these videos and these videos only. It doesn't matter if they are set to the first or second priority.

- Windows is up to date

- Emby is up to date

- K-Lite is up to date

- Nvidia is up to date

One thing does spring to mind --- I actually haven't tried rebooting since this started. I'll do that when the server is done with the current transcodes its working on (later tonight).

Another thing springs to mind too --- does anyone know if Emby has problems with SLIed 1080s? I've noticed that emby only recognizes one card installed (which is fine, because I allocate that card to Wondershare and give Emby full access to the first via Nvidia's configuration tool).

@@Lighthammer - As far as I have understood, you have:

  • Pulled a video from a DVD
  • This video transcodes and plays correctly with Emby
  • Then you converted the video using a 3rd party tool
  • The result of this conversion does not play well in Emby with hw acceleration
  • But you can play it with VLC
  • Now you think that because it plays in VLC, it must work with Emby hw accelerated transcoding

So far correct?

Lighthammer

That's mostly right --- a few clarifications:

- I transcoded them from the DVDs with the same tool. Both versions were transcoded with Wondershare.
