sailracer 9 Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 I'm just about ready to drop my cable, but have one concern. I DVR "The Daily Show" and watch it the next evening. I obviously won't be able to do this anymore and do not plan to replace my cable bill with an equally large YoutubeTV bill for that show and a small handful of others. Comedy Central puts episodes on their website, but trying to play websites from my TV is a bit of a pain. Is there a way in Emby (or other program) to simplify playing videos off of websites on a TV? I can play from my computer browser on the TV, but that involves getting off the couch, logging in, etc. which I am philosophically opposed to doing to watch a TV show . I'd much rather have a remote-friendly way of doing this like Emby provides for my other media. Thanks in advance!
Sammy 790 Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 A few things come to mind here. 1. PlayOn Desktop. You can record with it then point Emby to the recordings as a TV Series or Shows Library. 2. If you can find the RSS link / URL for the stream you can use the Podcasts Plugin. 3. Download via Sonarr and NZBGet. Anything in the free on the web is legal to download. 4. IPTV but I won't get into that. Sent from my SM-G960U1 using Tapatalk

So you can stream it if available for free on their website but cannot download it to watch it? Hmm. You're probably right but I fail to see the difference, especially if it gets deleted. I mean who has room for every episode of The Daily Show, especially since the content it pretty time sensitive and out of date within a week or even a day. EDIT: BTW, PlayOn does basically the same thing and I haven't seen them getting into any sort of trouble with ACE (yet..). Edited January 14, 2020 by Sammy

You're probably right but I fail to see the difference, The difference is economics . When you are on their website they have the ability to do all sorts of things like track that you are there, show you ads, etc. That is how that website is able to exist - by selling that information to advertisers (you realize nothing is really free, right ). When you directly download that content instead, you bypass all of the ability for the entity that generated that content and made it available to you (at expense to them) to generate income in order to continue to exist and provide you with this content.

I get it. I suppose they can still track you even if using PlayOn because it basically uses a browser engine to "record"

ebr 16199 Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 If the site in question publishes an RSS feed though - then they are saying this content can be consumed externally. So that is a good option in those cases. 1
