Upgrade NAS or buy Raspberry PI or ???

I would like to upgrade my current EMBY configuration.

Because my NAS is used for so many things, it is getting extreme slowly. CPU load 100%, Memory 75% all the time.  

Lately I can't watch series or movies anymore without restarting the Emby app several times. Login takes forever.

 

Therefore I would like to know which is the best way to go:

- Replacing my Synology DS115J for a newer type DS118?

- Run all NAS apps and EMBY server on a seperate Raspberry PI (or other Single board?) with SSD and my NAS as network drive.

- Run all NAS apps and EMBY server on a seperate Raspberry PI with the HDD from my NAS (Disk only, no Synology)

- Or are there better options I did not yet think of?

 

I use a Synology NAS with Emby Server installed:

DS-115J Armada 370 800mhz 256mb

1x WD Red 2TB 5400rpm (WD20EFRX)

because of the 1 bay I make realtime backups (only personal data folders) on Onedrive via Cloud Sync.

I watch all content on my LG OLED 65 C8 4K UHD, it plays almost everything without transcoding via the LG Emby app.

 

I also use my NAS for downloading via Downloadstation with SickChill, Spotweb (nzb), etc.

Because I posted my question earlier on the Dutch forum Tweakers, I might as well also post it here for the Dutchies:

 

Wat is de beste en meest duurzame oplossing om mijn systeem te upgraden.

- Is het meest slim om mijn DS115J te vervangen voor een DS118(? of DS120J?)

- Of kan ik beter alle apps los laten draaien op een Raspberry Pi i.c.m. een kleine SSD en mijn huidige NAS?

- Of ben ik beter af met een Rasberry Pi als NAS met mijn huidige WD HDD? (ofwel zonder Synology)

- Of zijn er nog betere opties waar ik niet aan heb gedacht?

 

Na jaren met tevredenheid gebruik te hebben gemaakt van onderstaande combi merk ik dat de boel steeds trager gaat werken en wil ik graag e.e.a. upgraden. Ik weet alleen niet waar ik nu het beste mijn tijd en geld in kan investeren, daar zou ik graag jullie hulp voor gebruiken.

Ivm 1 Disk draai ik eem Backup excl video content op Onedrive via Cloud Sync.

 

TV & Audio

LG OLED 65 C8 4K UHD

Denon AVR-X 1500H 7.2 versterker.

 

Ik kijk voornamelijk series voorkeur 1080p of beter. Voor het binnenhalen gebruik ik de NAS met SickChill, Spotweb en Downloadstation (NZB & Torrents). Om te kijken gebruik ik EMBY mediaserver op de NAS en de EMBY App op mijn TV, dit streamt vooralsnog alles (4k HDR) zonder te transcoderen.

 

De laatste tijd merk ik ook dat de NAS steeds meer moeite heeft om alle taken uit te voeren, de apps zijn slecht benaderbaar, dingen aanklikken gaat supertraag, de verbinding van de TV met Emby valt om de haverklap weg, het beeld stopt regelmatig etc... Ik heb de meeste taken (downloaden, cloud sync etc.) al gepland om enkel s'nachts uit te voeren maar dan nog werkt het niet goed. Geheugen blijft rond 75%, CPU schommelt constant tussen 70-100% (o.a. Python 30%), Disk regelmatig 99%.

 

Mijn HTPC (voor Ziggo Go) of laptop gebruik ik voor het handmatig binnenhalen van 4k content e.d. dit vormt namelijk een te grote belasting voor de NAS. Zeker het uitpakken van >50GB bestanden. Vervolgens moet ik alsnog handmatig de content weer naar de NAS kopiëren, ofwel niet ideaal.

 

Ofwel, wat is de beste en meest duurzame oplossing om mijn systeem te upgraden. Qua budget ben ik denk ik met alle opties voor < €200,- klaar. Desondanks zou ik het ook niet erg vinden iets meer uit te geven wanneer dit echt significante verbeteringen oplevert.

I don't have any experience with that model, but am very pleased with my DS418play.  The only thing I'm running is Emby server and Surveillance Station on mine and it works well as a Server as long as I don't transcode 4K to 4K which can be slow.  

 

If you think you may want to run Emby server on your NAS in the future I would highly recommend getting one with an Intel processor to use with vaapi.  If you had to do any transcoding on the Realtek it may be very slow. 

 

The thing I would be cautious about with the D118 is that it only has one bay.  A model with at least 2 bays would be better for data redundancy. 

 

However, the DS118 should do the job if all you're doing is storing your data and should be an improvement over what you have now.

After some consideration I've decided to go with the Raspberry Pi 4. I think it's best to use my NAS for what it's made, simple Network Storage :-)

Also a Pi is considerably cheaper, and easily upgrade-able / swap-able in the future.

 

It took me some time but I managed to install my new Pi with Docker Compose and containers running Sonarr, Radarr, Bazarr, Transmission and ofcourse Emby.  (if anybody is interested in my Docker-compose.yml let me know)

Emby works fine, except for the DLNA functioning, my server is not showing in my network, I'm still looking into that. When using the Emby app on my tv it works great though.
