Almost every Movie ends up with the wrong subs, and most TV shows also. I have had all 4 plugin's for subtitles in use and swapped the order around for them, but for some reason almost everything needs to be corrected later.  Does anyone have personal experience and suggestions for which providers they find work best for them for: MOVIES .. and then also TV Episodes.

Thanks.

I'm not sure which is best, but Open Subtitles is pretty popular.

I would assume without a hash match it is just a guessing game.

Require a hash match

Requiring a hash match will filter subtitles to include only those that have been tested with your exact video file. Unchecking this will increase the number of matched subtitles, but will also increase the chances of mistimed or incorrect subtitle text.

Hash matches, don't seem to mean crap. Just my experience. I am thinking, sadly, just remove every option to add subs .. and do it manually.. since I have to either way. But. . IF I have the ability to use the 4 plugins then I get no choice?! They are going to get subs no matter what. Then I run into problems trying to remove already added subs..  I can remove them 6 x and they show up again over and over. There is for sure something wrong with the subs system(s).

Wrong with what subs system?

What is wrong with it? Every damn show/movie ends up with subs that do NOT match the file?!

I spend more time trying to delete and find subs that fit then I do watching vids.   I would have thought if I use all 4 x addons for subs, it would have a better chance at finding what SHOULD be there.. infact it is worse.  I literally have to check every single movie or show and then replace the subs by hand. Seems a bit pointless imo!

Emby Server downloads based on the way you configure it. Please don't take this out on us.

That is why i am asking.. which one works and actually finds subs that fit the files..  4 x addons.. used them all, configured them in various orders.. and I am still having to check every single file and make corrections. This cannot be the intended result?

just an example.. if u grab every 2017-2020 vid file 720p+ off YTS, in theory..  and 300+ different series weekly episodes .. would you expect that 95% of subs added by Emby are incorrect? .. no.. nor would I.. but that is what ends up happening.. in theory.

This is a subjective question that will vary based on your media, but i haven't seen too many complaints about open subtitles when you enable the option to require a hash match.

Luke, if I disable "require a hash match", will the subtitle provider first check if there are any hash matches, and if not, fall back to file name searching?

I am just trying to find out why 95% of subs are "wrong". I didn't build it, I just use it.

I find it hard to get decent matching subtitles at all, even searching manually.  Sadly, from my experience a high failure rate is to be expected...

I guess it may also depend on how mainstream the film/series is.

There are many subtitles out there from various sources: different official releases, streaming services or “fan made” subs and translations. It shouldn’t be so hard to imagine why subs are not always in sync.

I use bazarr. It has many more providers and options than emby. I don’t allow emby to download any subtitles

I'll preface this with the usual YMMV because everyone has different media from different sources, but 95% miss rate for subtitles is very high in my view. I have found that subs originating from Addic7ed tend to be good though you don't always know where they come from until the end of the show.  Right now I'm only using OpenSubtitles and SubDB plugins with Emby and waiting for the Addic7ed plugin to be finalized (new API). If I have to search manually (via Emby UI) then I match the subs name to the media source name and not the library name, ignoring the fetch count.

I hate their service more than any others. I keep getting ads for some stupid poker thing in the middle of dramatic scenes. Its infuriating and I have no way of knowing which shows will have that and which ones wont. sifting through 2 or 3 thousand .srt files seems worse than just using no subtitles.

Well ads only come into play if you're using the website.

exactly this. i've never used their website. but it's very frustrating because it completely takes away from the experience . half the reason i have my own content is because i was sick of ads on sites like hulu. i dont want to see ads on my own server, of any nature.

Ah ok, I didn't realize they embed them into the subtitles. I'm assuming vip users don't get that?

Strictly speaking, if you use your own content this isn't an issue.  All my discs have subs embedded and those come through with the rip.

Even more strictly speaking, you can properly own content which nevertheless does not have subtitles.  I have bought Japanese disks (not at the time available in the West), and been able to locate admittedly unofficial subtitles for them.  I also have a good number of (mainly older) English disks which don't have subs - which I want even for English shows because my wife is hard of hearing.

I have a hard of hearing emby using parent and I’m able to find almost all the subs I need. I’ve not had any negative feedback from them or my own brief testing about ads being included
