Tupsi 4 Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 So I was thinking about buying a new TV and this time with my history of Samsungs TVs and broken App Stores at some point in time, always resulting in myself buying another FireTV in order to get emby to work I though: why not buy a TV with Android OS? Now after browsing the forum a bit it seems that this would not really solve my problems as I read a lot about ancient Android OS Versions resulting in stuff which is not supported or other things which are plain broke. So my question for this thread is simple: Are there actually happy people here using Emby on a TV which has Android OS (and therefore have no need for an extra Box/Stick/whatever)? If so, I would love to hear from them and which brand they are actually using. From what I found so far on the market here in germany, I am stuck with either Sony or Phillips if I dare to ask for Android OS.
Jdiesel 1431 Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 I have a Sony TV with Android and I don't use it. Biggest reason for me was that refreshrate switching doesn't work on it. The Shield TV is just a much better experience than the built in OS. Maybe for very basic needs or for those who aren't picky it would be alright. On the other hand, the Roku OS on my TCL TV is just as good as the dedicated Roku imo.
Buster_Briggs 1 Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 I love EMBY on my LG OLED using their web/os. Some of their 2019 models now also have Earc which allow you to do passthrough of TruHD and DTS:X to a Earc capable receiver which would future proof you for some time imho. I am currently running only Arc which does not allow the HD audio passthrough which forces me to use an NVIDIA Shield for the time being.

You prefer the Roku STB instead of the RokuTV? I actually prefer the RokuTV over anything else. RokuTV has special abilities other Roku STB do not have. RokuTV on some models can render in full DolbyVision. RokuTV also has on device decoding of 7.1 codecs down to 2.0 or 5.1 on-the-fly. This means RokuTV transcodes far less often than a Roku STB would. RokuTV has an IR remote that is far lighter, thinner, and doesn't eat the batteries like the normal STB WiFi remotes do. I haven't changed the batteries on my RokuTV once in the last 6 months. The Roku STB with WiFi direct remote I have to change the batteries damn near every month. The RokuTV does lack the "private listening" on the remote but that is because it isn't WiFi remote. Can you give a reason why the RokuTV isn't as good as the Roku STB? Is it the remote control finder button the ultra has that makes it the best? I am curious where you stand on the Roku hardware battles and which capture your interest and why. Full-disclosure: I have almost every different flavor of Roku to develop on and always use the RokuTV as my preferred device. The other models are used only to confirm changes and test with. Initial development always occurs on a RokuTV first. Edited January 1, 2020 by speechles
Tupsi 4 Posted January 2, 2020 Author Posted January 2, 2020 well, as much as I love to hear about Roku TV in another thread, this was about if its even possible to be satisfied with just a TV running Android OS (like the Sony modells). My only setup running more then stereo is in another room anyway with a beamer instead of a tv, so my initial question was just about a simple tv setup, so hearing people with positive LG webOS is very good to hear. My experience is Samsung only over the last maybe 10 years (with two models) and what Samsung is doing there on there own OS isn't really thrilling to me; to be able to get emby app running there was always such a pain, that I ended up buying Fire TV sticks in order to be free of the hasle. But, call me an optimist, I was hoping to avoid buying yet another stick for a fresh tv, at least not the first few years.
