Emby Connect Vs Remoter Connection confusion

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi guys,

I'm trying to set up Emby Connect to connect to my server remotely, however I am a bit confused about the process:

I know that you can also setup standard remote connection all you do is:

Allow remote connection in Emby settings

Set your wan ip address or ddns domain name if Ip is not static

Do port forwarding on your router

All of it has been tested and working

However with Emby connect

Do I have to:

Allow remote connection in Emby settings?

Do port forwarding on the router?

Thanks a lot

Yes you still need to. All Emby Connect really does is take the place of a ddns.

Thank you Jdiesel, however I cannot really connect to it through EmbyConnect, I login to it and then have to add server manually, but for that I have to know its wan ip which will change at some point.

Does it mean EmbyConnect doesn't actually work?

Have you linked your emby account to your user under the server settings? I believer it is under User-->Profile

Yes, the server has been added but not listed unless I click to add it manually and put it's ip address, then I can connecting bypassing Emby Connect

if it's not listed then you didn't go through the linking process that is documented in the wiki link he gave you above.

Hi Luke, I have followed the guide and added and accepted the user, I see the cloud logo on the user avatar, I have also allowed the user to be avalible when connected remotely (just in case:) but unfortunately cannot see the server.

I run it on a vm and I can connect to it just fine manually from the Internet.

Is there any particular option I need to use for the Emby connect or I guess the whole purpose of it to minimise the manual configuration on the server in the first place. Please advise

Thank you

So you see the cloud user on the avatar, now take that same cloud user and sign into the apps with that user, and your server should show up on the server selection screen.

Luke, I think I got it now! I will test when I get home, before I was signing in with my emby community login, not with my "cloud one" I have just added. Also I have noticed that the cloud user can be only one on per server or per "community login" I should say?

Sorry just to clarify, so I have a user called admin.

This user is a cloud user, I put my emby community user name (let's say alex@email.com) and accepted it its got the cloud logo next to it.

So then when I login to emby connect I put this username (admin not alex) and admin local pass for it right?

No you alway login to Connect with your Connect username not your local username.

Local username is only used on LAN/WAN/DDNS connections not app.emby.media.

Right, well in this case it doesn't work, I cannot see the server in Emby connect, but yeah manual login over wan with local credentials work fine.

I have port forwarding set up and emby allows external connections.

Sorry on my Windows system I just added my Connect user to my Local user and went to app.emby.media and logged in with my Connect user and my server was listed.

Maybe a server log will show something, maybe blocking on your system.

Yes can be as it is installed in the VM

Allow remote connections in emby settings:

yes you do, it should be under the networking tab but AFAIK this setting is on by default.

Do port forwarding on the router:

yes you do, otherwise WAN traffic cannot reach the service port on the machine VM on your LAN. I would leave emby alone and forward  only the secure port, 8920, on your router. If you have correctly configured Secure connections emby will enable them by default and ask you to reboot your server for the changes to take effect.

I wouldn't recommend running Emby in a VM. I tried this and it seems to prefer living on a machine of it's own. as well, you should definitely look into making sure you are only allowing secure remote connections to your server. You can do this for free with let's encrypt certificates.

Hi heypaleblue,

Thank you for the advise, yes I have generated a ssl cert for my domain name, removed the unsecured port from the forwarding table, only forwarded the secure one and forced Emby to connect over SSL only, it all works fine.

I might have found a bug in ver 4.3.1.0 @@Luke it seems like when you add the local user to EmbyConnect but don't click agree on the email you can see the server, once you agree to adding the user, the server is no longer found in Emby Connect

Can somebody try to replicate this behaviour?

I can replicate the first part but not the second. The server doesn't go away.

Remember that if you delete the server from the server selection screen then it do go away and you'll have to do the process again.

Yes, haha, I didn't quite put it right, yes it does stay, I was meant to say if you remove it,  then accept the user (or visa versa), then it is no longer be found.

So basically  for Emby Connect to work for new setup if there is no server added yet. better not to click to accept the cloud user, otherwise the server will never be found, without accepting it works flawlessly

Clicking the accept email will not cause any problems. If you deleted the server from the server selection screen then that's why it went away.
