cookem 1 Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 ever since emby upgraded to 4.3.1 my transcoding-temp directory seems to just grow out of control until i need to stop the server and delete the folder because it has reached 700 to 800GB. is there something i can do to get the folder to clean up the old files or limit the size of it?
Happy2Play 9780 Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 First is figuring out why item are not being removed automatically when the media is stopped properly. Or if it is from say another process. But restarting your server does clear this folder.
cookem 1 Posted December 30, 2019 Author Posted December 30, 2019 (edited) restarting does not clear it.......i have to manually delete the folder. I am using emby with hdhomeun primes and roku as the client. Edited December 30, 2019 by cookem
Happy2Play 9780 Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 We may need to see a server log then. I can't see why a restart would not clear the folder unless they were still in use.
speechles 2055 Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 (edited) How are you exit the Roku application when watching these items? Please try to reduce your use of the HOME button when watching video using the Emby app. Do not just power off the Roku TV while playing video either. Make sure to exit the video player then press HOME or turn off the Roku TV. The server should be cleaning these up. It might be possible something is preventing their deletion. Having the server logs as suggested above would help us know if that were the case and what that something might be. Thanks. Edited December 30, 2019 by speechles
Luke 42079 Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 If restarting the server doesn't clear it then it must be being denied access to delete the contents of the folder. I would check the permissions on it and make sure emby server can delete from it.
cookem 1 Posted December 30, 2019 Author Posted December 30, 2019 I tried excluding the directory in windows defender to see if that was causing some issues.
Luke 42079 Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 Ok let's please look at an emby server log. thanks.
WilhelmStroker 102 Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 I tried excluding the directory in windows defender to see if that was causing some issues. You could also run the handle.exe utility to see if there's anything else keeping a handle open to the files/folder.
Solution cookem 1 Posted December 31, 2019 Author Solution Posted December 31, 2019 It seems like excluding the path from windows defender did the trick....i don't see the directory growing out of control and if i restart the size goes to zero 1
cookem 1 Posted January 3, 2020 Author Posted January 3, 2020 (edited) It looks like that did not completely solve the problem. Although a restart cleared the files the directory had grown to 423GB with no devices streaming prior to the restart. I have attached the server logs. logs.zip Edited January 3, 2020 by cookem
Luke 42079 Posted January 3, 2020 Posted January 3, 2020 @@cookem, are you able to create the situation again? It would be best to try and find out which playback scenarios caused it.
cookem 1 Posted January 13, 2020 Author Posted January 13, 2020 My transcoding temp has grown to 1.05TB.....I have attached the latest logs logs2.zip
Luke 42079 Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 What server activity was happening at the time?
cookem 1 Posted January 14, 2020 Author Posted January 14, 2020 According to the console there were no devices streaming when I looked at the directory size. Restarting again cleared the directory. Is there someplace else I should look?
Luke 42079 Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 So you have been recording and streaming to Roku is that it? How many Roku devices? When you stop playing on the Roku, how do you typically do that?
cookem 1 Posted January 25, 2020 Author Posted January 25, 2020 I have 4 Roku devices...I also use emby theater on windows....sometimes chrome as well as emby app on android at various times. For each Roku I have harmony hubs so when the activity ends the home button is pressed so the emby app is exited. There are some series that are setup to record as well. Obviously at times nothing is happening so it should clear this folder but it does not appear to do that. It also does not seem to automatically restart at any time that I have noticed if it is supposed to auto apply updates.
ebr 16184 Posted January 25, 2020 Posted January 25, 2020 ... I have harmony hubs so when the activity ends the home button is pressed so the emby app is exited. Unfortunately, on the Roku OS, that is not what happens. Instead, when the home button is pressed our app is just abruptly killed with no warning or opportunity to recover. This means that the server does not know that you are no longer watching and continues to serve up the content. After a couple of minutes, it should realize the app is gone and clean up but the best thing to do is actually exit the playback screen (back button) to end playback.
Luke 42079 Posted February 4, 2020 Posted February 4, 2020 We're taking another look at this with the Roku app. Thanks for reporting.
cookem 1 Posted February 4, 2020 Author Posted February 4, 2020 Thanks....fyi....i tried putting back and then home in my Harmony end activity for emby but the directory still seems to be growing
ebr 16184 Posted February 4, 2020 Posted February 4, 2020 Thanks....fyi....i tried putting back and then home in my Harmony end activity for emby but the directory still seems to be growing Did you provide at least a slight delay between the two? If not, the exit command probably doesn't have time to do anything before the home button kills the app.
cookem 1 Posted February 4, 2020 Author Posted February 4, 2020 would you say a 2 second delay would be enough? I will try adding that and see what happens.
ebr 16184 Posted February 4, 2020 Posted February 4, 2020 Start with just 1 or even 3/4 of a second (750ms). If that still doesn't work, you can bump it up.
