rsaxman 0 Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 I’m considering rebuilding my file structure, I’m not entirely thrilled with my existing build. What’s the most common way folks have their server structures? I’d like to have users view movies organized by genre
ebr 16187 Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 Hi. Just follow our naming conventions and you will be fine. Users can view by Genre in all apps without you having to do anything with your file structure. Thanks.
BAlGaInTl 288 Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 Agreed... follow the naming. As for structure.... I use Docker, so I have everything in a single share called "media" Then I have 4K TV Movies Music Home Video Fitness Then I build emby mapping libraries to each of those. The only reason I've separated 4K for now is that my server can't handle the transcoding yet.
Guest asrequested Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 The only reason I've separated 4K for now is that my server can't handle the transcoding yet. To be clear, 4k is handled just fine. It's HDR metadata that isn't handled. And HDR isn't exclusive to 4k.
crusher11 1102 Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 I think they may have meant the machine their server is running on doesn't have the horsepower to transcode 4K if needed, so it needs to be split out and hidden from anyone using a lower-res screen. Which is nothing to do with HDR.
rsaxman 0 Posted December 29, 2019 Author Posted December 29, 2019 OK thanks. Read through that process and it makes sense. I do have a couple follow up questions - how does this work if my collection spans multiple hard drives? some of the genres display the proper thumbnail while it appears that others use a cluster of images from the movie folders themselves. Can genres be edited? I'm getting separate Sci-Fi and Science Fiction. Thanks
Luke 42083 Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 That horror thumbnail is something we used to provide but we don't anymore. Now it's auto-generated images based on your content. Yes you can edit images using the 3-dot menu.
Happy2Play 9783 Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 OK thanks. Read through that process and it makes sense. It is sad that the /metadata sub folders have pretty much been removed (primarily from a new database stand point). If you still have the /metadata/genre folder with all the previous images you can manually apply them again one by one via edit images on each genre.
BAlGaInTl 288 Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 To be clear, 4k is handled just fine. It's HDR metadata that isn't handled. And HDR isn't exclusive to 4k. My personal server has difficulty with it... so it's in a different library that I don't share with external users.
rsaxman 0 Posted December 30, 2019 Author Posted December 30, 2019 OK so what about both a sci-fi and science fiction genre showing up?
Happy2Play 9783 Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 OK so what about both a sci-fi and science fiction genre showing up? What do you mean? They are two different genres, so I would assume the media has those specific genres in their metadata.
Gilgamesh_48 1240 Posted December 30, 2019 Posted December 30, 2019 What do you mean? They are two different genres, so I would assume the media has those specific genres in their metadata. That is where the "Genre Cleaner" plugin comes into play. The sites that Emby gets the metadata from are not smart enough to recognize that those are really the same genre but it is easily fixed with the "Genre Cleaner" plugin. I have mine set up so I end up with a total of about 10 genre instead of the 20-40 that are seen without the cleaning. "Genre Cleaner" is one of the most useful plugins that Emby has available.
