That's what others have requested. Otherwise if there are only a few unwatched episodes of one show, you would never see them if there are many more episodes of the other shows.

In a situation where they then get marked as watched, and thus removed from the rotation, that makes some amount of sense (though it's obviously not true that they would "never" show up). In a use case where everything is always in the rotation, it doesn't.

I've implemented that episode balancing in version 2.0.2.0 (January). Do you think it was better for you in earlier version?

It isn't a bug, i just have forgotten to handle that situation for "random series/ordered episodes". Will correct it with an update.

hi, I just wanted to ask if this might be included in the next update ?🙂

I can't say I noticed a difference, what changed?

Howdy folks! I noticed when the AppleTV app updated, the Virtual TV channels stopped working on those devices. It was working completely fine the day prior to the appletv app update. When I click to play, it attempts to stream, I hear audio for about 1/2 second on the tv, then it closes the stream connection on the server and promptly exits the app.

I tested this on the web and theater app and VirtualTV still works fine.

Emby Server Version 4.8.8.0
OS: Linux Fedora Server 40
Kernel version: 6.10.3-200.fc40.x86_64
VirtualTV Version 1.1.3.2

@pünktchen Should I be using a different version of VirtualTV maybe? I assume it updates on its own but maybe I am wrong? I see an unavalible 2.x version up above

Logs attached just in case its useful.

Yes, please manually update to the 2.x version from the plugin catalog. I've disabled auto updates on purpose by marking the catalog versions as "development".

@pünktchenI updated to 2.0.3.0 and my result is similar but different. On AppleTV It begins playing, I see the video for about a 1/2 second, hear audio and it stops playing. It sounds like It tries again right away after stopping because I see it flash back on for less than a 1/2 second again, but then stops. The difference now is instead of the app exiting, it just goes back to the channel guide....

Attached is a log trying to play one of the newly created VirtualTV channels. I don't see anything that stands out to me in the logs, it just seems to close itself on its own now. It works fine on web, theater & android. It played fine on appletv until about 2 days ago.Emby-log-appletv-virtualtv-08192024194559.txt

As this is obviously an app problem, it's important to reproduce the problem without VirtualTV and then start a new thread in the correct forum section.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. In the Emby Apple TV app, from your normal libraries, start a video that was failing with VirtualTV.
  2. Seek half way thru the video so that a resume point will be created. Stop playback.
  3. After stopping playback, restart playback by selecting "Resume". (Does it work correctly? If yes, proceed with the next step.)
  4. Rotate the Emby log file.
  5. Start playback of some other video in the Emby Apple TV app and let it play.
  6. In some other Emby app, browse to the video with the resume point.
  7. Enable "Play On" by selecting your Apple TV (casting symbol at the top right of the screen).
  8. Start playback by selecting "Resume". (Does it fail? If yes, proceed with the next step.)
  9. Start again at point 4, but this time select "Play From Beginning" with the "Play On" feature.  (Does it fail? If yes, proceed with the next step.)
  10. Start again at point 1, but skip point 3 and 5.

If you didn't notice a difference it doesn't matter, does it?!

The current behavior isn't what I'd prefer, and we've had conversations previously about the methods of randomly selecting, so yes.

Was there ever an acceptable version for you?

I can only guess here, but probably the user(s) who is playing the channel does not have access to the Home Videos library. I know, the description says it's not needed. But unfortunately that's not true anymore. It has changed with some of the 4.8 versions of Emby and i don't have any solution yet.

Hello @pünktchen

Sorry for the late response, I left out of state on holiday after your response so I am just now getting to it...

I followed your steps and I found the fail-point right away. I just wanted to run it past you first before creating a bug report in the Apple TV threads.

Following your instruction, here are the steps I took (or as far as I could get anyway):
1- Attempted to play a VirtualTV channel
failed (obviously)
2- In Apple TV I navigated to and started the video that was failing with VirtualTV
works
3- I seeked forward on the playing video mid-way and stopped playback. Then I resume playback with "Resume"
works
4- I stopped that video and started some other random video from the beginning and let it play on the Apple TV
works
5- I opened emby on my browser, located the video I was trying to view on VirtualTV and using "Play On" with the Apple TV selected, I clicked on "Resume".
FAIL

At this point on Apple TV, the random video that was playing has stopped playing, but I see the video description of that random video that has just stopped playing on the screen and AUDIO of the video I was trying to watch with the "Play On" "Resume" option in the background.... I have no control over the app on Apple TV and must force Emby to close now on Apple TV.

Edit: *the fail point on step 5 looks exactly the same as when it fails trying to play the VirtualTV channel from the Live TV guide.

My log is in the order of the steps above if that helps any. Let me know if you think this sounds okay and if it does, I will create a thread on the Apple TV forum.

You should also test if the crash by the "Play On" feature also happens if nothing else is already playing in the Apple TV app!
And when creating your bug report, do not mention VirtualTV! It will just confuse the devs while the bug in reality has nothing to do with the plugin. It's all about remote controlled playback with the "Play On" feature.

I was not able to reproduce the issue if nothing was playing. I tried several videos in a row, exited the app, reopened it and tried again with different content. It was playing fine as long as I did not have something already playing to start with on the AppleTV app....

I will write up a report after dinner and leave VirtualTV out of it then and attach that log file as well (not that the log really shows anything since its an issue within the app). Hopefully they can understand and reproduce it and fix it. Thanks! 😀

Do you think its possible we might get a "radio" version of this?

It would be really awesome to be able to tune in to fake IPradio when i dont know what to listen to bc emby's primary shuffle features are, well, frankly, broken.

Sorry, but no. I'm not interested in this. There are like millions of free internet radio channels available.

Its ok to say you dont want to, thats fine. But thats an absurd and utterly bizarre answer to give here.

There are tens of thousands of iptv streams but that wasnt a deterrent for you to make this fantastic plugin.

But they are not free, illegal and often unreliable or of bad quality.

👆 I just thought I'd drop a link here to that bug report post I made regarding the Apple TV here. I just verified its still not working with the server update.

Can you show a screenshot of where you clicked resume? Live streams don’t generally have a resume button.
