casperse 0 Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 Hi All For the time being I am running both servers and it works great! (Love Emby!) Is there any one who have a workaround for using extras material across platforms (Using both Emby and Plex on the same media folders?) Is "Extras" folder in Emby the only way or is there some other shared standard between Emby/Kodi/Plex? Plex Extra_Directory_Type is one of: Behind The Scenes Deleted Scenes Featurettes Interviews Scenes Shorts Trailers Other Or naming: -behindthescenes -deleted -featurette -interview -scene -short -trailer -other Sorry if this is known I couldn't find any solution searching Br Casperse
rbjtech 5284 Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 (edited) https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Movie-naming#movie-extras so folders only, Emby does not currently support filename extensions .. Edited December 24, 2019 by rbjtech
casperse 0 Posted December 24, 2019 Author Posted December 24, 2019 (edited) Thanks so (ok) would be the same for Plex and Emby: Special features for movies can be stored as video files in an extras folder under movie folders. Nested folders are not supported. In addition to extras, several other sub-folder names are supported: extras specials shorts (ok) scenes (ok) featurettes (ok) behind the scenes (ok) deleted scenes (ok) interviews (ok) trailers (ok) Dosent seem like the Extra subfolder works in Plex....(That would be sweet because Plex/Emby/Kodi extras plugin would mean that this folder would work across all platforms Edited December 24, 2019 by casperse
Spaceboy 2573 Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 Personally I’d recommend using extras over specials. In the past I’ve had specials picked up as a movie folder with some Mickey Mouse movie
Luke 42078 Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 We do actually support the file name extensions, but only when the movie is in it's own folder. @@cayars can add this to the wiki. Thanks. 1
gismo33 4 Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 @Luke: casperse mentioned in post #3 that plex doesn't work with folders called "extras" or "specials", but they instead support the folder called "other". In comparison emby supports folders "extras" and "specials" but not "other". Personally I am fine with "extras" but to be more supportive for users who run both apps or who wants to migrate from plex to emby, what about supporting the "other" folder too?! I know plex is a competitor but it would be great if emby supports this folder structure. (For comparison see full list of extras in plex here and full list of supporting extras in emby here) Thanks
gismo33 4 Posted April 8, 2020 Posted April 8, 2020 Since we can distinguish movies extras into sub-categories like behind the scenes, specials, interviews etc (in both emby and plex), the folder „other“ is like a generic folder where we cant categorize the movie extras. I thought emby also got that generic folder with folder called just „extras“ (seems generic to me). So it would be nice if emby can support the folder „other“ too and treat it like the (generic) folder „extras“. So that „other“ is like an alternative namening.
gismo33 4 Posted April 9, 2020 Posted April 9, 2020 (edited) Is this in plex extras documentation? Yes, plex supports folder called "other" which is not categorizable extra content (no BTS, no Interviews, no short, no featurette etc.) See embedded links on post #6. Edited April 9, 2020 by gismo33
GagHalfrunt 0 Posted June 8, 2020 Posted June 8, 2020 I'm also on the same journey of seeing if Emby is a viable Plex replacement. First observations is it seems to be much faster but not so good at auto-matching metadata (at least I can fix that manually). Really like the support for multiple versions of films (e.g. Extended vs. Theatrical). To be honest the lack of "Other" support is right now a showstopper for me. I have hundreds of films and quite a large portion have these folders. It's made a mess as a result with hundreds of disassociated extras. Like the original poster, I used this folder to store anything which did not suit the other folders, e.g. Music Videos, Adverts (not Trailers), Singalongs etc. I'm not going to mass-rename until I'm sure I can drop Plex. I don't hate Plex, it's the regular bugs that's making me look for alternatives.
Luke 42078 Posted June 8, 2020 Posted June 8, 2020 Other support will be added for the next release. Thanks for the feedback ! 1 2

crusher11 1101 Posted June 14, 2020 Posted June 14, 2020 What I'd like to see is subfolders under the extras folder. Some of my films have dozens of extras and it's impossible to keep them organised.

I still have a lot of content from back when I used to run a Plex server and used an "Other" folder to store extras. I figured I would have to rename them all, as the Emby documentation still doesn't mention you can now also use an 'Other" folder. NiceMarmut 2 Posted May 13, 2025 Posted May 13, 2025 While the "other" extras folder works fine for movies, it does not trigger the files as Special in TV shows.

NiceMarmut 2 Posted May 13, 2025 Posted May 13, 2025 Here's what I'm seeing with files in "other" folders at the Season level. tvshows/Parks and Recreation (2009)/Season 01/other/Parks and Recreation - S1 Ann Music Video-other.mkv It shows at the beginning of the season, no Special Episode Info, no Special indicator as seen on other files. It is not aliased into the Specials folder. The same behavior happens if the file is not in the "other" folder, so just a file in the Season level, I've had no luck with any -indicator tag (-other, -deleted, etc.) for both movies and TV. Here's one in a "deleted scenes" folder at the Season level. /tvshows/Parks and Recreation (2009)/Season 01/deleted scenes/Parks and Recreation - S1 Hose Cold Open-deleted.mkv It's at the end of the Season, says Special, has Special Episode metadata, alias in the Specials season. If I do have an "other" folder at the series level, the files do appear in their own Other Season, though it is as before treated as a regular file.
