Musicbrainz Doing by brain in!

So, I've just started using Emby for music, I have quite a few albums which are Various Artists, but instead of saying various artists Emby insists on showing me a random name from the album as the artist.

I did a search and somebody else had the same problem, the solution appeared to be to remome all musicbrainz tags.

I did this.

Refreshed Metadata, rescanned library it still insists on showing anything other than "Various Artists".

So I removed the musicbrainz plugin, rebooted, rescanned, refreshed....and....

It still shows the random name.

I've checked the tags in the files, album artist is set to "Various Artists", no musicbrainz tags exist.

How do I fix this?

Infact, if I reinstall musicbrainz, it shows the artist id as:

89ad4ac3-39f7-470e-963a-56509c546377

which is "Various Artists".

I'm absolutely baffled why Emby is refusing to show this

If I go to the metadata manager the albums show in there under Various Artists!

If I go into the meta data manager and click on the name of the offending artist, the musicbrainz id has been set to the "Various Artists" id correctly, but the name has been set incorrectly.

Changing the name of the artist fixes it here, but I think something is broken here....

Hi, Emby doesn't refuse anything. Why do you feel that way? Emby will show you what is embedded into the song file. Have you checked on this?

It wasn't embedded into the song file.

I suspect what happened was along these lines, emby imported the music brainz tags and incorrectly assigned the Various Artists name field for the artist incorrectly, the id was correct but the name in the emby generated metadata was wrong, it should have said "Various Artists" and not picked a name from the arists on the compilation.

My subsequent attempts to fix this all failed because I hadn't noticed that Emby had created the meta data for this Artist, "Bob" with the id for various artists.  So when I kept trying to reimport, emby saw the matching artist and kept using it.

It was only by accident that I clicked on Artists and saw the offending artist with the wrong name but correct id.

Somewhere in the initial import the wrong name was attached to the various artists id.

It happened on multiple albums.  Now it could be me, but I'd have to go back and check and that means deleting stuff and retagging the files with the musicbrainz tags.

Can we go over a specific song example, as this is all a bit vague. So you're saying your files aren't tagged? Thanks.
