centuryx476 9 Posted December 1, 2019 Posted December 1, 2019 Hello, I' am trying to figure out why when I playback any video on my roku devices. The server jumps to 100% CPU. The file types is a standard .MKV file (10Mb bitrate) 1080p video. This only happens when i am playing back on a Roku device. When I do a playback on my android phone, the CPU stays at a normal 5% to 10% usage which is normal. I do not want to attach any server logs here due to it having a lot of internal information that I do not want shared.... Facts: Latest version of Emby Server This is happening on the dedicated emby windows VM. As a test I installed Emby on my workstation and getting the same results( i9 9900K) I do not know why this is happening. Thank You
Happy2Play 9785 Posted December 1, 2019 Posted December 1, 2019 Is this wired or wireless? But sounds like server is transcoding the media being delivered to the Roku. Have you tried adjusting the in app quality?
Luke 42086 Posted December 1, 2019 Posted December 1, 2019 But sounds like server is transcoding the media being delivered to the Roku. Exactly. The roku doesn't support the media you're playing, therefore it has to be converted on the fly. Does this answer your question?
centuryx476 9 Posted December 1, 2019 Author Posted December 1, 2019 Hello, Roku does support .MKV I believe https://developer.roku.com/docs/specs/streaming.md From the Page MKV, WebM supported video codecs: AVC, HEVC, VP8, VP9 supported audio codecs: AAC, AC3, EAC3, Dolby Atmos, ALAC, DTS, DTSE, FLAC, MP3, OPUS, PCM, VORBIS Example File Info I have pulled using MediaInfo: 1 Video Stream: AVC 1 audio Stream: AAC LC
centuryx476 9 Posted December 1, 2019 Author Posted December 1, 2019 Hello, I switched from .MKV to .M4v and the 100% CPU usage went away. In fact it is now hovering at around 3% usage which is "Normal" There is something within the Roku that is not liking the .MKV container. GO ahead and close out Thank You

Also have you checked the dashboard and/or the in app nerd stats to show you why it may be transcoding?
