miniliQuid 94 Posted November 28, 2019 Posted November 28, 2019 (edited) Not sure if there are actually many people using emby that also read a lot of books. However with Ebooks being a hot thing right now this idea popped into my head. I have a lot of ebooks which I generally keep on my normal PC. However this way it has no back-ups cause I only back-up my server to an external location. So I was thinking about switching them to my server and then I thought I can also put them in the emby folder. The request may be a bit out of the ordinary since emby is more for playing files and things rather than reading, but could a reader be implemented at some point in the future? A book library and an implemented reader, specially for mobile devices I guess (phone/tablet), but perhaps for browser/theater? Would help me get rid of yet another app and have all my "media" in the same place Edit: If you liked this also take a look here for ebook expansion https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/80398-book-serverreader-incorporation-suggestion/ Edited December 30, 2019 by miniliQuid 14 3
Jdiesel 1431 Posted November 28, 2019 Posted November 28, 2019 Have you tried using the book library type? I don't think there is any way to view books in any of the emby apps at the moment, only download them to your devices.
peredor 0 Posted November 28, 2019 Posted November 28, 2019 (edited) hi, I actually added my books, but there is no ebook reader implemented. Metadata is another point, but a simple reader couldnt be so difficult i think, a verry good reader for websites already exists. Ii think we could use the reader without license problems. You can download the source and install it on your linux server, but you have to set up the Webserver and mariadb on your own. There is no robot for metadata in Trantor, so you have to feed the database by hand greetings Peredor Edited November 29, 2019 by ebr Language

I don't think there is any way to view books in any of the emby apps at the moment, only download them to your devices. No not yet, cause I am pretty much unsure if I actually want it since I would still need a reading app for it. Though when it is on the server putting it in emby may be beneficial (and others have easier access to them as well). But my main interest would be a way to read them (so no downloading of files). I have disabled file downloading on my server for all users, so they wouldn't be able to do anything with the books if there is no reader. That's the reason I started this topic to see if people would be interested in something like that (cause I would be )
CivBase 2 Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 I would also appreciate an embedded ebook reader. It would be especially useful for ebooks that I use as technical references. 2
lexisdude 145 Posted December 14, 2019 Posted December 14, 2019 Please review; been at this request for a LONG time now.https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/80398-book-serverreader-incorporation-suggestion/
tmysik 9 Posted February 8, 2022 Posted February 8, 2022 In my case, a library would be great. I could download the file and transfer it to my e-book reader quite easily.

So having a library and downloading the files is currently an option. Now what we need is a book reader implementation to complete it (so downloading is no longer needed).
tmysik 9 Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 @miniliQuid a library with book metadata? or just files? I am asking because I haven't seen metadata like book authors, series, etc. Thanks.

Luke 42077 Posted March 1, 2025 Posted March 1, 2025 There is now an OpenLibrary plugin in the Emby Plugin catalog for books, and it supports ISBN lookup. Please try it out and report your experience. Thanks ! 1
Luke 42077 Posted April 13, 2025 Posted April 13, 2025 An update to the Emby Open Library plugin has gone out to support lookups using either ISBN or the Open Library Work Id. The Work Id should help make matching easier, although you can still lookup using ISBN. Here is clarification on the differences between Open Library works and editions: https://openlibrary.org/help/faq/editing#work-edition
User2808 3 Posted April 14, 2025 Posted April 14, 2025 The ID didn’t found anything… can you give an Open Library Work Id for example… I use „OL15413843W“ to get Panem but it didn’t work. Sincerely

brothom 177 Posted July 18, 2025 Posted July 18, 2025 +1. ebooks are very interesting, physical media is disappearing and harder to get and I miss reading books but getting old scifi books is a pain... with the exception of ebooks. I'd love to see some player integrations as well, I did find some promising Javascript readers like epubjs for .epub files: https://github.com/futurepress/epub.js. Would love to see support for it, even if only via the browser or mobile app. I'm not going to read a book via chromecast or my tv anyway lol.
