dcol 175 Posted November 27, 2019 Posted November 27, 2019 The default sort order is set to 'Folders'. I would prefer to have all libraries I select to default to release date. I know I can manually set it, but I have to do that for every folder in the library. I would like to see the ability to have it automatically set the default sort order for all new folders I create. 11 6
Luke 42077 Posted November 27, 2019 Posted November 27, 2019 Yes we need to improve this sort of control. Thanks for the feedback.
dcol 175 Posted November 27, 2019 Author Posted November 27, 2019 Thanks, Please add to the todo list
Mimpster 1 Posted May 7, 2023 Posted May 7, 2023 Any update on this? I have a lot of folders containing movie series. The default Sort by option is "File Name", but I want the movies in each folder sorted by "Release Date". It's very tedious to click on each folder and manually change the Sort by option, especially when doing this for multiple users. When Emby updates, all of my changes are set back to default and I have to redo everything again. It would be great to be able to set default Sort by options for folders, and it would also be great if those types of changes were unaltered by app updates.

Hi, having them reset on app updates is not normal or intended. We’ll try to find the cause of that. Thanks.
eightoftwelve 9 Posted June 4, 2023 Posted June 4, 2023 Plus one for this change. It is an issue on my Samsung TV where I have to re-install every month, and then I loose my previous sort orders. Thanks. Scotty
tmurphy2792 27 Posted January 15, 2024 Posted January 15, 2024 +1 for this. Just set up all of my favorite podcasts on Emby and having to change the sort order to Release Date for every device for every user for every podcasts means a lot of manually changing sort orders. Would love if the admin has the ability to set a default sort order per library, and each user had the ability to override that default per library, and have it reflect across all devices. Because while release date makes the most sense for podcasts, title makes the most sense for movies. 1 1
jirawatsr 0 Posted February 21, 2024 Posted February 21, 2024 +1 waiting for this my prefer "date add" sorting
ZMA777 0 Posted June 4, 2024 Posted June 4, 2024 (edited) +1 quite an essential feature for me as well ideally you'd be able to change the default view/image size/shown fields/sort order per library and the settings are synced across different devices Edited June 4, 2024 by ZMA777
yarafie 6 Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 Definetly +1 Vote for this to have a default sorting for folders and content of folders to date added
spard4 12 Posted April 13, 2025 Posted April 13, 2025 Hello, I mainly use the folder view, and by default, files are sorted by "file name." On each client, for every user, I have to manually edit the metadata for each folder one by one to change the sorting back to "title (ascending)." It would be very appreciated to be able to set a per-user option to apply a default file sorting order. Thank you in advance. 1

Luke 42077 Posted April 21, 2025 Posted April 21, 2025 Hi, more options to control this are possible for future updates. Thanks.
Luke 42077 Posted May 28, 2025 Posted May 28, 2025 Hi, not yet, but it's something we plan to look at . Thanks.
KylieManuel 6 Posted June 16, 2025 Posted June 16, 2025 +1 for improved library/collection options, ideally set at library or collection level for all users. 1 1

Is there any status update you can provide on this feature? This even makes the official podcast plug-in difficult to use because of the fact you have to adjust the setting for each individual user to sort from name to release date.
Luke 42077 Posted August 30, 2025 Posted August 30, 2025 HI, more control over this is planned for future updates. Thanks.
doxxmulder 2 Posted December 9, 2025 Posted December 9, 2025 +1 from me. I'm constantly having to reset the sort order for each individual podcast to 'Release Date' because the default sort is alphabetical (why?). Is there an xml file or something I could manually edit to override the default sorting?

So we need to look at getting a different default set depending on the content. Thanks.

I would recommend having the user/admin control the default sorting behavior when setting up the initial library. Since in most cases the title makes sense, you can have it be the default, but still have it be changeable. I think this would save you guys the headache of new niche content types coming up and having to develop additional sorting exceptions.
