4.3.0.26 Software update affecting conversions

I noticed the update today and was wondering why Emby slowed down a bit.  A closer look and found that Emby was now converting ALL previous files with no user intervention to cause this, just the update.  I have several TV series I regularly download and have on auto convert.  With the new update 4.3.0.26, Emby is now going through my libraries and one at a time, checking but not sure if converting anew or if verifying something.  I took a look at the conversions and was able to see how many files were in a queue for each TV series.  I finally had to stop the conversion and delete all the auto convert folders.  It seems fine now and also to convert fine, but alarmed it was going through all libraries as if they were all .TS files.  Most of my files are .MKV with a few .MP4 and am ok with either but do not want Emby to go sniffing through each library.  Not sure if this was by design or an issue, but reporting it in any event. Files attached.

Hi there, check the Conversions section of the emby server dashboard. Did you setup a conversion on a top level parent folder? It's going to want to convert everything underneath that if you did.

I've seen this as well.  The problem is that the files Emby was converting were already converted.  I had to remove all my conversion tasks to get it to stop.

Luke, yes, the root folder was set.  Understand that there was no "conversion" happening on the folder (save for newly recorded programs) prior to the update.  Once the update took, Emby went through all folders and started a conversion process again.  I am not sure, but suspect it sniffed to see if the files were .MKV and if so moved on to the next file, but not sure and conversions are very slow.  I would not care if it just did a quick scan, but it seems to be converting again.  When I removed all folders  and then clicked on a child folder, it did the same thing but quicker and any .TS file was quickly converted.  Hope this makes sense.  Your thoughts! ? :)

Please go into the server dashboard under the Conversions section. Cancel any conversion jobs that show up in there. Then it should not happen anymore.

Luke,

I did that first thing when I noticed the issue.  It still happens.  It still happens when I checked convert / automatically convert new content. Emby will sniff the folder and appear to be converting even though all are .mkv files.  So no, just doing it in seasons that are not complete.  Emby still checks the converted ones again, once it does and appears to convert it stops then converts any new content as before.

No it won't, not if you delete your conversion jobs.

Please show a screenshot of what the conversions screen looks like. Thanks.

Luke,

Sorry was out of the net for a bit.  I wound up deleting all the jobs before you suggested.  However, when I add a convert of say an entire library, it still wants to convert or at least snif it out even if a .MP4 or MKV.  I just added one library at a time as  it appears CPU intensive.  Strangely, after the last server update, all my conversion I had where it auto converts suddenly changed from the ICON of the program/series to a download bubble.  Saw no option other than to delete and it was not converting, so deleted them again and added them one at a time over the weekend.  Now CPU scans are very slow. (yes different issue, but it seems associated with the 4.3.1.0 update). Otherwise, conversions are back to normal.

Hi, I'm not really sure how to respond. If you ask it to convert an entire library then that's what it's going to do, and it will be CPU intensive. That part of it really shouldn't be a surprise.

The only things that will not be converted in this situation are videos that already match the target profile of what you're converting to. If something is converting that you think shouldn't be, then let's look at an example. Thanks.

Luke,

The first part you mention is not a surprise.  It is what happened and continues to happen since the prior update when conversion of a TV Series (e.g., Bat Masterson) was converted before.  When I deleted the folders (TV Series) from conversion, and then add via the TV series so it automatically converts new content, it will then go back in and convert EVERY thing despite having been converted previously.

I currently have 17 folders all TV series.  Now, last week's update caused each folder to show as a green cloud and downloaded and had to delete them again (nothing added to the folder would convert) and again, conversion occurred for everything in the folder (series).  I can replicate, - delete a folder with a few episodes, then add that Series again so it converts all new items added, then send you screen shots and logs.  I hope this makes a bit more sense.  Let me know if a test to delete, add and screen shots.  Right now, Emby was stuck on 99.5% in the scan media library and after about three hours, ticked to 99.6%. It is scanning and has bogged down my Emby server so it would be tedious to do as I am suggesting tonight.  Must let it complete overnight (usually takes less than 30 minutes on average)

Luke,

Over the weekend I decided nuke my computer profile.  System run great but when I checked the profile size found it to be over 2.5Gigs.  As such, thought this would give a nice clean start to Emby while I was at it.  Once Emby was installed with initial configuration, I used the backup plugin to configure it.  I still had to do some final configuration such as user ID and PW for certain plugins.  When I clicked on a library, in this case CANNON to auto convert, Emby went in and rechecked all episodes,; 18 items in this case.  A closer inspection of the other TV Series/Libraries show Emby already preparing to go through the library again and convert.  All items in Emby have been converted.  There are no .TS files. I had to delete the others as it was bogging down my system.  What I did a few weeks ago, is do one TV Series at a time and this way minimize impact on system performance.  Any ideas?

Also, when I went back to recording a TV series and checking the box "don't record episodes already in my library", Emby will still record SOME of the TV Series and not others.  In the past, I let it do a complete scan, then one at a time added the TV Series I wanted to record automatically.  In most cases this worked and if the episode was in my library, then it would show as grayed out.  Sometimes I had to rerun the scan.  Other times I would go to each TV series library; e.g., CANNON and delete everything except the .mp4 or mkv files and did a scan.  Then would add the TV Series checking the do not record if in my library box.  However, in some TV Series, this does not work.  It will either GRAY out those I have or will want to record all of them in my series (that are airing).  If I need to put in a separate ticket, let me know. Any suggestions to fix will help.  I like to record old TV series, but sometimes, missed one, the station skipped it or some other aberration to include power failures causes episodes not to record.

Make sure to read the help text underneath that option. Sometimes the guide data doesn't have enough information to make that comparison.

Luke,

I think you are correct in the guide data may be missing or incomplete. For some TV Series a couple weeks ago, it wanted to record everything despite the very episodes being in my Library.  However, as the week past, found Emby was finally graying out those episodes so suspect the station was either not getting all the guide data or was not transmitting.  Either way, Emby did the best it could with what it received.  I think all is ok now.
