Windows 7 as a server with WMC

Back to trying Emby more lately. Really like what's been done in the past year or so.

Great work on live TV! So much smoother, especially with direct stream. Roku 3 is taking it well! So many great improvements to all of it. Seriously, thank you for all the great improvements!

Question about the support for Windows 7. Will Emby server continue to work on it, even after MS drops support in January?

Got WMC on the same machine still. It's still the main way we watch live and recorded TV. Both cable via HDHomerun Prime and OTA via Hauppauge tuner. Keeping it going with EPG123 which has been good.

Emby, while great on the Roku and Android phone, we still haven't switched to it for main TV use.

Question is, will Emby continue working on Win7 for some time? I'd rather not move it from the Win7 WMC box, as that's also where the OTA tuner is installed, and where the antenna connects. Also rather not upgrade to Win10, as I don't want to fight to get WMC working on it.

Yes it will, and we'll continue to support it (as long as possible).

If you have any remote access, you should realize that Win 7 will probably be a huge hacking target once MS stops applying security patches.

Just something to consider.

That's great news, thank you.

So much simpler an answer than a post I saw on some competitor.

Yeah, no remote access to that one unless via VPN so I'm not too worried.

Cut the cord recently and will be continuing to work with emby more. It's honestly really, really good. If wmc ever does get to the point where I don't want to keep it, I think emby will continue to be a top choice to replace it.

The Internet has far, far more articles predicting this would happen to XP than telling us it did; in fact I can only find articles saying it didn't!  Hackers are probably more energised by the bigger challenge of grappling with the latest and most popular platforms.  In any case, a decent anti-malware program with a current subscription should keep you safe - which is true with any age of system, of course.

[P.S.  I have extensive practical experience of this: until my recent retirement I was computer and network manager for a large department in the UK university which receives most hacking attempts on its network...]
