kikinjo 282 Posted October 27, 2019 Posted October 27, 2019 Device Access Enable access from all devices In dashboard if u want to limit a user to some device, by default u get all devices selected and you have to deselect all devices first (one by one) to be able select device you want to allow for specific user. Kinda annoying, at least implement buttons deselect all so we can do this very quick. If u have many devices on your emby server this can take hours.
kikinjo 282 Posted October 27, 2019 Author Posted October 27, 2019 By default user can use all devices that he uses, i want to limit that to specific device or 2 devices. Whats so strange about that, since option is already there, its just not intuitive to setup ?
Luke 42083 Posted October 27, 2019 Posted October 27, 2019 I'm just curious what you're doing. Why do you want to limit device access?
kikinjo 282 Posted October 28, 2019 Author Posted October 28, 2019 (edited) Because i want to disable all web browsers and allow a user tu use either android app or emby theater app, since web browser don't support much of codecs and subtitles and browsers start more trans-coding jobs because of that. So idea is to limit devices to use more apps that will do less trans-coding on server. Edited October 28, 2019 by kikinjo
Luke 42083 Posted October 28, 2019 Posted October 28, 2019 And you don't want to just disable all transcoding?
kikinjo 282 Posted October 29, 2019 Author Posted October 29, 2019 Of course not. Whats the issue There is already selection of devices for user implemented to choose what is allowed, by default for user all devices are allowed. I just suggested to implement new button "deselect all" so i can find users device and click it, so i don't have to spend 1h to deselect all devices from list first.
Luke 42083 Posted October 29, 2019 Posted October 29, 2019 Would more advanced control over what can be transcoded suffice instead? Essentially you're looking to avoid transcoding that would be really painful for your machine, right?

Essentially you're looking to avoid transcoding that would be really painful for your machine, right? Lets put trans-coding aside for a minute, shall we? I try to enforce that all my emby server users use 2 clients, ET and Android app. There are many reasons why, trans-coding is just one of them. I just suggest that we have easier way to select those 2 devices for user. Browsers make my time hard since they are not apps like ET or android app, yes it is working but not on all video & audio codecs, subtitles is also another story with browsers. Idea is to standardize clients, nothing more, and to do it now i have to spend whole day for 15 users since there is no deselect button on the device selection screen. Is device limitation working at all ? Or i m wasting my time on it
Luke 42083 Posted October 30, 2019 Posted October 30, 2019 It's working but it's an awkward feature. You have to first grant them access to the device so that it will show up for selection, and then uncheck it after that. Ultimately I think the feature should go away, but i want to make sure everybody's use cases can be satisfied in other ways. So that's why I was asking.

I really like the security it provides. If someone's account were compromised, their device would also need to be taken in order to gain access to my server. How does Emby remember the device and actually know it's the same one?
Luke 42083 Posted December 10, 2019 Posted December 10, 2019 Uuid if available on the platform. If we removed this feature and a user account was compromised you would just change the user password.

If we removed this feature and a user account was compromised you would just change the user password. What if a user did not know that there account was compromised? Also what if a user shares their account with other people that I don't want on the server but I don't know that they have done this? The device limit works for both of these scenarios. Hopefully there is no harm in at least leaving it as is. Thanks
