plasticserver 0 Posted October 27, 2019 Posted October 27, 2019 (edited) I have a server running correctly locally, now I'm trying to access it from another device. I try "host: [redacted]" and "Port: 8096" to no avail. It doesn't work from Emby's "Add server" > "Connect to server" menu, nor it connects from the browser. The wiki says the port should be the culprit, but when I use the https://canyouseeme.org site, it says "Success: I can see your service on host: [redacted] on port (8096) Your ISP is not blocking port 8096". What's up? It used to work from said device until it didn't anymore. I notice I had a different IP back then, so perhaps my ISP changed my IP and something went wrong in the process (in fact I used to have maybe the same one that appears on the Wiki example - 192.168.1.2). Luke 42081 Posted October 27, 2019 Posted October 27, 2019 It doesn't work from Emby's "Add server" What happens when you try?
Happy2Play 9783 Posted October 27, 2019 Posted October 27, 2019 It doesn't work from Emby's "Add server" > "Connect to server" menu, nor it connects from the browser. I can enter that address and port and get to a Emby server login page without issue.
plasticserver 0 Posted October 27, 2019 Author Posted October 27, 2019 What happens when you try? I just get a generic failure to connect message from Emby and Safari, as if typed any random string of numbers. I can enter that address and port and get to a Emby server login page without issue. How strange! How come I can't? What could be the cause? I turned the firewall off too. Incidentally, I looked at the server's log and found a mention of a [redacted] address, which I tried because it's the one i remember having displayed before. It works... so case solved? But the server itself still instructs me to use the other one, which doesn't work on my end. [image deleted]
Happy2Play 9783 Posted October 27, 2019 Posted October 27, 2019 You would need to explain how you are connecting, but some hardware do not allow NAT loopback.
Luke 42081 Posted October 27, 2019 Posted October 27, 2019 What do you mean instructs you? The apps don't tell you what address to use, rather it is the other way around on the server selection screen.
plasticserver 0 Posted October 27, 2019 Author Posted October 27, 2019 You would need to explain how you are connecting, but some hardware do not allow NAT loopback. I wouldn't know much about that. Just about a nondescript home setup, my personal computer, a router, macOS. What do you mean instructs you? The apps don't tell you what address to use, rather it is the other way around on the server selection screen. I just mean that it shows a different address from the one that works for me. The server is saying "use this", no? I don't understand why it's the one I found on the logs that works.
Solution Happy2Play 9783 Posted October 27, 2019 Solution Posted October 27, 2019 The ip in previous image was for WAN connections not LAN connections. Sounds like you are doing a LAN connections so the Remote WAN address does not apply. 1
plasticserver 0 Posted October 27, 2019 Author Posted October 27, 2019 I don't understand what that means but it sure sounds like something, so I'll just trust it's out of my technical scope and working properly. Thanks.

Thanks. On the dashboard of your emby server, you should see two urls: "In home (LAN) access: <some url>" and "Remote (WAN) access: <some url>". Clients that are connected to the same local network as the server will have to use the LAN url (which should be http://<local ip of server>:8096) A web browser on the same machine as the emby server should also be able to access emby via http://localhost:8096 Edited October 27, 2019 by darkassassin07
swehawk 7 Posted November 13, 2019 Posted November 13, 2019 I have a somewhat similar problem. I got a new modem-router from my ISP. Duplicated all settings from the old router, i.e port forwarding. Now I can't connect to my Windows 10 Emby-server from my Andoid mobile using the servers local IP-adress. But if I enter the external IP it works, even though the phone is on Wifi!? Also the Emby app in my windows laptop can't connect. BUT, strange thing, EmbyCon on my Rpi (ethernet) does connect, even though it's using the local IP!?It all worked fine before switching the router! Nothing changed in my windows servers firewall settings. At the moment, I'm clueless!

If you're on Windows, have you tried the machine name? Router could have a firewall in it too.
swehawk 7 Posted November 14, 2019 Posted November 14, 2019 Are you positive the IP address you're using is correct? If you're on Windows, have you tried the machine name? Router could have a firewall in it too. Well. Server has fixed IP. EmbyCon (on ethernet) connects fine to that IP:<port>. Windows firewall has rules to allow all connections to <port> which obviously works since EmbyCon can connect! Also I can connect from my phone when I,m away from my LAN using my domain name (external IP). The Emby app in my windows laptop (Wifi) also fails to connect (Can't create web socket). So it seems like it's not possible to connect from a device on Wifi, only on ethernet (EmbyCon), but I can't see any logical reason for that! Another strange thing is that I have configured Emby on my phone to use my external domain name. However, when I,m at home on Wifi AND turn off mobile data in my phone, Emby still connects! How can Emby connect via Wifi using my external IP?

I can't speak for EmbyCon, but Emby apps will retrieve local and remote addresses from Emby Server, and when you're on the local network, they'll use the local address.
