Do I have to be connected to internet for DVR to work?

I am using windows media center but looking for a replacement due to no support after next year. I need to know if I have to always be connected to the internet for the dvr to work? We use a hotspot for internet because we live where high speed internet does not exist. So I turn the hotspot on to download the guide and then off again. Will this service work the same as windows media center in this regard? Thank you

Hi, yes it should be fine. The only potential nuisance is that images are downloaded on demand when needed, and not ahead of time during the guide refresh. That means as you browse around, you may not see images.

How often will you turn the hotspot back on?

Honestly I would say once a week? As long as there is a description then it would be good. I don’t really care about photos as long as the guide resembles a list view with basic descriptions.

Once a week should work - with the obvious limitation of possible stale guide data during the disconnected period (but you are already aware of that from previous similar use).

What apps will you be using?

Thank you. What do you mean by what apps? I was only going to use the one on windows hooked up to the tv with hdmi. No plans on using phone or mobile apps

He means what Emby apps. For example, are you primarily using the Emby web app?

I would use the emby theater app on windows. Would I need anything else? Basically the PC is a standalone dvr and that’s it

Okay, so the server and Theater are on the same machine?  Just make sure you start up Theater each time you are connected to the internet for your guide download so that it can validate as well.

Then, I think, everything should work okay for you.

Thanks.

Would it have to be connected to the internet every time I started the software? I would think it would download for the 14 days and stay on the local storage. I know guides can change but that’s extremely rare we live.

No, what I was saying was that Theater will need to validate Premiere as well periodically so just be sure to bring that up once whenever you have your internet connection so that it can do that.

Thank you guys for all your help. Really appreciate it and sounds like this is an amazing solution to wmc when they stop updating the guide
