emby stutters while plex plays fine

I recorded some tv with the emby dvr. When I play it back through emby, it has loading problems and pixelation on all platforms I use (roku, windows, android). If I play the same video through plex, it generally plays perfectly. Is Plex doing some hardware acceleration or other magic that emby isn't? If so, any ideas to make emby work correctly without the stuttering?

I run Emby and Plex on a qnap ts-451+
