Renaming a folder was a disaster

A couple of days ago I noticed that I had misspelled a word in one of my folder names, Myster-Thriller-Crime, so I renamed it  to Myster-Thriller-Crime. the folder completely disappeared from my home page, so I did some searches and saw that renaming a folder triggers a re-scan.

First, I don't understand why this was necessary. I have all my media and all my nfo files stored in the folder. Why was a re-scan needed? But okay, I waited and eventually the folder came back. All was good. Until today.

I'm a big fan of film noir, so I had set up a collection for those movies, as well as folders for some of my favorite stars: Humphrey Bogart, Jimmy Cagney, Peter Lore, Edward G Robinson. I looked at my Film Noir collection today. And it was empty. I checked the actor collections. Empty.

I had over 150 movies in the Film Noir collection. Setting up those collections took hours. They're all gone.

I cannot conceive of any reason that simply renaming a folder should have such a catastrophic effect. Except possibly really bad code design.

So I'm going to have to go through every movie in the folder from the 1940s and 1950s to build my collections again. This does not make me happy.

I would like to hope that someone looks into the code and figures out a way to prevent this from happening, so that no one else has to suffer like this.

Are you renaming a folder or are you renaming the library?

Renaming a folder will remove every item in that library as the original path no longer exists so every item is removed from the database and re-added for that library.

What libraries do you have and what is the folders assigned to those libraries?  Emby does not allow libraries to contain sub-folders of existing libraries.

Apologies for my mistake... I renamed the library, not the folder containing the movies.

Ok, yes you are right, we should do better at this so that a scan isn't needed afterwards, and the upcoming 4.3 server release is making changes towards doing that.

That's good to hear, thanks.
